Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) My truck is leaking ATF.

There is a cylinder coming off of the top passenger side of the transmission, right underneath the exhaust manifold. It has two lines coming in/out of it. One goes to the cooler, and one goes around the front of the transmission and in the other side. The one to the front of the cylinder ( which is the one going to the cooler ) is leaking at the fitting.



What can I do ? And what is that cylinder ?



Sorry if this is really simple but about the only thing I have ever done to a transmission is change the filter and adjust bands.

It is a heat exchanger. You can probly just mess with the fitting to stop the leak. It is low pressure.

I just got back inside from trying to tighten the fitting. It needed a 7/8's wrench, so I had pretty good leverage. And I was barely able to move it at all, I mean like a 32nd of a turn or something. So I guess I'll find out tomorrow if it was enough.

if you havent stopped the leak yet, id remove the line and get a closer look,if the line is cracked,or split tightening it wont help. You want to fix thsi asap. if it fails totally you will likely need a rebuilt trans,since running it out of fluid is never cheap. As for low pressure,there is quite a bit of pressure in those lines at certain times,mainly in lockup.

Well the little bit I was able to tighten the fitting helped, but it didn't quite stop the leak. It is still leaking, but it is quite a bit less , I guess I should try one more time.

Fix for fittings.

Saw your post published in issue 47 page 40 ref this leak. I had the same leak on my truck at about 20k. Had the fittings replaced under warranty and the Tech advised that they have done several in the past and that it was a poor design on the fittings. They are also shipped from the maufacture in a heavy grease to keep from rusting and this grease can sometimes cause a problem.



Like yours I could not get it tight enough to stop the leak, even though the fitting would not turn any further. Tech advised that the only fix was to replace the fittings and lines. Since the fittings were replaced I have had no problems in 30k.
