Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) mystery clunk

My truck has been doing something strange lately , after I drive it long enough to get everything warm , then come to a quick stop , I feel a thud from the rear. When I take off I get the same thud . It's not instantaneous , but a split second after I hit the go pedal , it happens. The truck doesn't't appear do have any U-joint problems, and I cant seem to duplicate it in the garage. Any help would be appreciated.

One suggestion:



Remove the driveshaft, clean the transmission splines and GREASE them.



Let me know if that fixes it.

I wouldn't grease the splines where the yoke goes into an auotomatic trans. I would see if I could get some grease into the slip yoke where the two driveshaft halves meet.

Could it be the fuel slamming into the ends of the tank? Do you hear the noise when the tank is full?

Check the u-bolts on the rear springs to make sure they are tight.

I'll be greasing the slip yoke on the shaft , tomorrow. As far as the fuel tank go's , it doesn't seem to make a difference. I looked at all the the fasteners on the rear axle/drive shaft, and there was no signs of movement or any loose parts. I'll be keepin ya' posted . keep the ideas comming , cause it's annoying the heck out of me.

Just thought, how much backlash with the ring/pinion in the rear axle? May not be it, just popped into my head.

I had that thought also , but when I shift from reverse to drive , and back , while sitting still , it doesn't do it . One other strange thing is that when there is several pounds of weight in the bed , it seems to be less noticeable.

Could it be your limited slip dif?? Mine does it all the time.

Well here's the deal guys, I adjusted the brakes (rear) , and greased the slip yoke , and it appeares the problem is gone . I guess i'll find out Sataurday on the way to Scheids . Thanks for the input
