I have a noise that bothers me and I and the dealer cannot find. It is some shere under the truck on the right side. it occurs when the wheels hit a bump/dip in the road.

My son said it sounded like loose shocks but it is toward the middle of the vehicle.

i and the dealer have been underneath and can't find anything loose.

Anybody have a similar problem?

What did you find and do to fix?

The shock rubber mounts have a metal sleeve in the center that the bolt goes through and if the mounting bolts are not tightened to proper torque they will pop and rattlle. bg

I also have this noise. I know mine is not coming from the shocks as I have replaced them and checked to be sure they are properly torqued. I think their is a tsb for this noise but I have not been able to find it again.

Do you have anything in the door pocket that might bounce up and down? I know this sounds obvious but I know several people who couldn't find a clunking that ended up being a wrench in the door pocket including myself. :D :D The dead givaway is when it makes a noise when you close the door.

Not exhaust, door pocket or junk in the bed, that I know of.

Will be under when I install new fuel tank and this Sat at S CAl Wrench Day.

I had a noise like this too. On my truck it turned out to be a piece of the body bracing just under the hood hinge. If you open the hood, walk back to where the hood hinges, and then look down in the gap between the fender and firewall you can see a small roughly triangular brace in there. On my truck one of the spot welds broke and it was vibrating around making a whole mess of racket when I went over bumps.

I haven't had time to take the fender off and weld it back together correctly, so for the time being a small "C" clamp holds it enough to keep it quiet.

Good luck, noises like this can really drive a person insane.

This has worked for me on many car/trucks.

Get a big rubber hammer and creeper. Roll around under the truck wacking stuff till you hear the noise.

If that does not find it, get a friend to stand next to a pot hole while you drive over it a few times (the pot hole, not the friend :)) till he/she can zero in on the location of the noise. May not be so easy cause of the Cummins rattle tho... :D

If you have any mods to your track bar (ie, Lukes Link) or a MagHytek diff cover, it may rub up against or hit the front diff cover when you go over a bump, especially when the wheel is turned. Check to see if there are any wear marks on the front differential cover.

Good luck

My clunk is the helper springs at the rear... . I write it off to a few more pounds I can support every time I hear it. You can test it by hitting some of the big bumps/potholes as you are turning or any other way that you can load up the helpers.

Good luck if not that. .

Funny you bring this up, I just fixed my "clunking" today. Both sides did it when hitting potholes or pulling into the driveway. Thought it was the cheesy Bilstein shock hardware on top of the shock but it wasn't.

Put wrenches on the lower shock mounting bolts... ... . those big ones with the nut that has the ear on them to keep them from turning when you tighten the bolt head. They had some play in them. Hit them with an air tool at the shop, and the passenger side tightened up slightly; the driver side was way loose. Clunking problem solved. Try it, but you may find unless you really get on it with normal wrenches you might not get the play out of them.

Good luck

My clunk comes from the rubber? bushing for the rear mount of the leaf spring. Hard to find it at first, but the slight deformation of the rubber bushing gave it away. Dealer says the bushing is not a replacement item, have to order the whole spring so I live with the clunk for now.
