I installed the mystery torque conv. (TQ) lockup switch in my 1996 D-350. I used the bl-or wire from the computer as described in a past TDR issue. The TQ locks up just fine, but when I take my foot off of the accelerator the lock up does not release. I must put the transmission in neutral and turn off and on the engine in order to regain control of the situation. To say the least, this is a pain in the rear. I have had the computer reflashed as per BD. Anyone have any ideas?

Dave,

The torque converter lockup clutch will not release as long as you leave the switch in the lockup position irreguardless of throttle position. It is manually locked and will not release automatically. You have to return the switch to the automatic position to release the lockup clutch solenoid. As long as the TC is in lockup it will not shift down either. If you try to come to a stop with the lockup switch in the lockup position, it will kill the engine. The truck will shudder like a gear drive if you forget to push the clutch in.

If your 96 is like the 97s, you must also remove the relay in the PCM and put in a jumper wire to the torque converter lockup solenoid. Ohtherwise you get feedback and ECM doesn't know what to do.

On the 96 Dodge with an automatic you must take the truck to a dodge dealer and have the transmission reflashed for updated codes if your are going to use the mystery switch.

I had them reflash the engine for towing at the same time, cost about $65. 00.

Make sure to remove the jumper wire in the fuse box and put the relay back in.
dodge will come up with a problem on their diagnostic box then try to overcome it by spending time on it. Time equals money to them.
