Napa Gold-- Bad filters??

I read somewhere last week that the Napa Gold filters were not recommended for the cummins engine. Is that true?

I've ordered Wix filters from Fleetfilter in the past and got the Napa gold instead. When I called them, they said It was a Wix filter-- just rebadged.

Is that why they are cheaper? Because they are cheaper made?

I'm running Fleetguard now and need to order more. Just wanting to know which way to go.

Thanks, Randy

Call your Cummins Northwest and ask them I did.....

I have a print out right out of there Maintnence book and there are 3 oil filters to date that shouldn't be used or i should say that are NOT approved by CUMMINS and they would be:

WIX, FRAM, and NAPA GOLD

Those 3 are not approved by CUMMINS for the B-series Cummins engine that they put in the Dodge pickups... Hope this helps...

If i can find that print out i will try to scan it on to computer and post it...

I used the Napa Gold filter on my first oil change, about 2000 miles ago. After reading this I bought a couple of the fleetguards for future use.

Do I need to change the filter now or will the motor be okay?

Will there be any warranty issues down the road because of this one filter??

Can I just change the filter without changing the oil or will there be excessive oil run out?

Thanks,

Russ

I think my 03 manual warns against possible damage from paper filters clogging the piston cooling jets, which will void your warranty.

There is no problem taking off the filter, filling the Fleetguard (within half inch of top, to prevent spilling) with clean oil, and installing it. The new Fleetguards (3rd gen) have a fiberglass (or some other fiber) not paper elements, so spend a couple bucks more for the required part.

As for buying relabeled filters off EBAY, let the buyer beware, there are many fakes out there, so buy it from Cummins or Freightliner (possibly for less than at Cummins).

I've had some very unhappy results with napa gold fuel filters on Fords... . it seems that the old napa gold fuel filter wouldn't stop the water from getting past the filters and doing damage to the injectors... the only filter that will do that is the OE filter by Raycor... . sold under 2 or 3 brand names... . once I found this out and had put a set of injectors in a F550 we own... after it was declined for warranty by the dealer... . because of the filter... I went back to napa asking for help with the bill.....

They (napa) didn't want to do a thing... . but in 60 days... the napa gold filter now had the raycor filter in the box instead of the WIX... their normal filter... ... even after we raised some HE** with them... they only stepped up for 40% of the bill..... and their tech people said they'd made a mistake putting the wix filter out to the public... .

Needless to say. . we don't use napa filters any more... . oil or fuel.....

Buyer beware... ...

I use Stratapore only on all my trucks. One reason I do it is because the oil flow holes going into the filter are much larger than other filters I've seen, and I don't want anything that could hamper oil flow on an engine that pumps oil at the rate of 20 gallons per minute!

I used to drive a Taurus SHO where the oil pump is rated at :12. 1 GPM @ 43 psi at 6400 RPM crank, which, BTW, is the entire 5 quart oil sump every 10 seconds. The maximum oil pressure that the pump can develop is 57 psi +/-5 psi. I know our CTD's wont run that but, the K&N filter that everyone used on these cars was rated higher GPM without going into full bypass. . ie; unfiltered oil. Thats what almost everyone used in their SHO's. Especially me, and that what I run on my CTD HO. BTW I dont have the SHO now Since it gave its life to save mine ... I was sitting in it with all about 2k worth of police red an blues going when a lady hit me at 80 mph as she was talking on her phone, so that was my wake up call to buy something BIGGER... ...

heres the one i use for my 2003 CTD H. O. ... http://www.knfilters.com/search/product.aspx?Prod=HP-4003

I ordered three(3) filters for $11. 00. Thx for the info. Just purchased my new 2006 Mega Cab. Still new to the diesel world. I'm hoping this truck will last for a long time.

I have heard the same thing that some of the paper filters will dissolve/or come apart, then obviously do some serious damage. I think our best bet as Cummins owners is to use Fleetguard/Stratopore filters, then all your bases are covered.

I don't know who makes case filters but as long as its not one of those listed above there probably isn't anything wrong with it. All that matters is the threads are the same and the gasket lines up in the correct place. You will find that alot of filters have the same mounting configuration.

So what about the mopar filters on ebay? Are they really mopar filters? Thats what i run just for the fact that the service department told me that if the truck had any problem, star couldn't blame the filter if it was mopar.

Here is an interesting comparison pic I took a while back of a Napa Gold on the left and Fleetguard on the right-
