Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) VP44 Advice Needed

My Lift pump went dead, so I don't have time to go to Cummins to get one from them. My local NAPA says they have 3 in stock. I know I have other routes that I didn't really want to get into, but I was wondering if there was anyone that knows if the item from NAPA is what I need, and if there is any special considerations for that part into a 2001.

Thanks for the help.

I wouldn't go that route. I'd go to Advance Auto & get a holley blue [bullydog big fuel kit uses this pump] It was on my truck for 2 years & always held 14 psi. at all times. The install is simple... . just cut your supply line close to the tank & run rubber hose in & out of the pump. Then power it up using a relay triggered by the stock fuel pump harness [red] & bypass the stock pump & the holley will work great.

It's probably just a Napa-boxed Carter pump... same as you're running already... in a pinch, should work fine.

I think several places are starting to handle these pumps since dodge went to the in-tank pump (no longer a dodge part)...

I strongly recommend the Holley Blue - just put one in yesterday to replace the POS Carter pump. I went thru 4 before I got smart and ditched those crappy Carters. Just couldn't stomach spending $430 on a FASS HP pump. I thought that maybe those Cummins campaign pumps that were suppose to be better than the standard Cummins/carter - they're not!

I had put in the Vulcan relocation kit, so replacing the Carter with the Holley was a snap - just add 1/2 8AN fittings and bolt it to the frame. Instant, steady 13psi!

Be sure whatever you buy has some sort of bypass circuit so the VP can suck fuel without restriction.

Build your own bypass or buy a pump that already has it.

A good plan would be to re-locate the pump to the tank area and install a new pump with the bypass circuit.

I forget the PN's. But they are here. Do a search and you should find it.

Good luck.

One thing to check is to see if it has metric threads for the banjo fittings, they are 12mm, most Carters are SAE Pipe thread.

Don't do what I and other have done - spend too much $$$ dicking around with the POS Carter pumps - 3 pumps ago if I would have gone the route I did (see GFS-392) I would be even $$$ now. But no stuipid arse me had to waste $500 on the way to spending another $500 to get it right. Do it right-do it once and move on. MHO

I won't have the time to do any bombs right now. The stock pump lasted 155k, I am hoping to get a good replacement that might last half of that.
