Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) NAPA valve cover gaskets?

Just set the valves a couple of weeks ago and now the new valve cover gaskets bought at NAPA are leaking. This sucks. Just NAPA junk, or should I get a set from somewhere else? Anybody else have this problem with them?

CF, those NAPA gaskets are LEFT-handed. Go to Cummins and get the RIGHT ones. :-laf

MOst likely the gaskets split ... NAPA tech folks are WELL AWARE of this problem. I've had dozens of them fail and no longer use tham ... pitch a BIG stink at NAPA and they will take good care of you. . If your NAPA guy want more info ... PM me and I'll get him hooked up with the folks who are in the know about the problem.

CF were your old ones bad? I have the gray ones on mine and I keep reusing them with no problems. Not sure how old they are, were on the truck when I got it over a year and 31,000 miles ago.

Thats what I have, the #1 cover seemed to be the worse leaker, with #2 following. I am not in the habit of using any sealant silicone or not. I went down and gave them hell tonight, bought a couple more. Put permatex tack on the inside, hope it helps. Will let you know. I figured I would change them out when I did the 100,000 mile valve adjustment, maybe I should have left well enough alone?

Well if all else fails the Cummins PN for the individual Marine gray gaskets is 3930906, a set is PN 3902666 but not sure if that's the gray or black ones. After 100k they're probably due to go

Thanks Vaughn, I will keep that in mind. Looking at the new one that failed, it looks like the oil is taking the inside path around the cover and the gasket, not the head and the gasket.

So far from my experience the FelPro black gaskets work the best out of the ones I have tried. I ran the gray Cummins ones for a while and they started leaking. I changed them out to gray Victor gaskets sold by Carquest when I installed the 60# exhaust valve springs this last Feb. before hitting the road to transport RVs. I now have about 67k on them and they are starting to seap a little. I did a head gasket on my cousin's '97 long before I worked on mine this spring and used FelPro gaskets and his are holding better then mine with more miles and time on them. The FelPro's are a harder rubber then the Cummins gray and Victor gray also.
