I agree that we should be able to open carry, and the fact that we are rationed our rights via CHL still leaves me

. HOWEVER, it is a bonafide fact that in most areas of the country you will get busted big time if you carry a concealed handgun without permit or license. It may not be RIGHT, but the cop that arrests you won't care, and neither will the prosecuting attorney.
If you are a guy who has a security clearance (like me), an arrest like that could leave you in the unemployment line. So in my case, I give the devil his due, pay the licensing fee, and make sure I can protect myself and family without going to jail for it.
Sdalton,
Unfortunately there is no way for the public at large to know whether somebody gets off on a technicality or not. Most police wouldn't know either unless it still shows up on their record or something. If they beat the rap, and are not listed as a felon, they can vote, run for office, own a gun, etc. I don't see any way to deny THEM their rights without making it easier for the government to deny ME my rights. If we barred anybody who had been arrested from owning guns, the pool of owners would be shrunk significantly I bet.
A paper from 2000 providing still more evidence of the law-abiding nature of the Texas CHL holders is provided at:

Also, to clarify my earlier post - I would be surprised if police officers AS A GROUP were more law abiding than CHL holders AS A GROUP. Wasn't trying to imply that all cops are crooks or anything. I posted the numbers for the CHL holders, if anybody can show me better numbers for police officers as a group I will holler "Calf Rope!" and eat some humble pie.
Information known to date: Texas CHL holders 199x less likely to be convicted of a crime than the general population.
Did I mention the "199x less likely" part?
