Boat-inboard-stern drive question

I am in the process of remodeling the livingroom. I would like to put in a ventless fireplace. Any prepwork before I re-sheetrock??

Good models, bad models, likes, dislikes...

Thanks for your help!

Beware that ventless fireplaces produce large amounts of water vapor (some up to 1gallon/Hr) and may cause humidity and interior window sweating issues. Also, read the warning labels. They are not rated for long usage (two hours) due to exhaust emissions that are not healthy in large doses. Look at direct vent to relieve said problems.

I agree... look at the direct vented (... maybe even 'B-Vent'?) models...

There are reasons why some municipalities/states don't allow the direct vent models to be installed... .

This is definitely something you want to get perfectly right... for the sake of your family and your house.

I have a Heat-n-Glo direct vented modeal at the apartment... seems okay.

Dad installed a Lopi (Travis Industries... ) 'Berkshire' free standing model with the "Ember Fyre" burner system... it is about as realistic as it gets when it comes to looking like real smoldering embers/burning wood. Other burners don't even compare to how realisitic this system looks...

He bought this model. I convinced them to go with a slightly more expensive model... afterall - you're going to have to live with it for a long time. AND - would you rather have a POS or a nice stove that is the focal point of your living space?

I bought them the 'bling bling' wireless RF thermostatic remote control for XMas last year... :)

Humidity would be a good thing, the house is very dry in the winter.

SAFETY is a major concern...

This is going to be mainly for looks and nights when it is really cold while watching TV, so it won't be on for more than 2 or 3 hours.

I really want a ventless, don't want to mess with siding on the house... old aluminum siding.

I still don't know how crazy I am about them.

The only place I feel a ventless gas heater/fireplace is perfect for is a greenhouse. I installed a ventless propane wall heater in my dad’s greenhouse. They are ideal for that purpose; they produce water vapor, and carbon dioxide, perfect for plants, not so perfect for people.

You might consider some sort of vented model, even if you have to fool with the siding.

I like mine alot and we do use it alot. Only downside is some discoloration to the ceiling above it but it takes along time to build up.

Carbon monoxide (CO) not carbon dioxide (CO2) is the MAJOR concern with the ventless gas heaters. If you put one of them in for the sake of you and your family make sure you invest in a really good CO detector. Last year an entire family in our county died because their gas heater wasn't working properly and was putting out huge amounts of CO. They didn't have a CO detector. Bottom line is that they all went to bed and never woke up. Sad but true. ANY heater that burns fossil fuel, which includes any gas stove, kero, exct, will produce CO. Some more than others. Good luck.
