Snow Chains Questions

Dealer recommendation, NC

Ok, so I buy this cool Navigation unit from e-bay. I install it and the stereo part works great. I fire up the NAV, and it throws an error "Error encountered reading Disc". I go to Troubleshooting guide in owners manual, and it says "Clean the disc and retry". I did that and no luck, still same error. Next box in troubleshoooting guide says "Try new Disc".

My question is, has anyone else seen this sort of thing before?? Anyone have a known 'good' NAV disc (current or downlevel) they would rent me to try or sell to me so I can get to the bottom of this?? I'm afraid to ask the dealer how much a replacement disc might be.

Thanks in advance!

Ouch. Hopefully just the disc is bad. Maybe try taking it to the dealer and asking if they can check it for you?

That IS exactally what mine is doing, I went through all the same stuff, finally took it to the dealer and wouldn't you know - it started working when I got there. I have had the problem intermittently over the last few months and cannot get it to them when it is not working, always seems to be fine when I get there. They did give me a new disc just in case, but it still has problems intermittently. Mine seems to be fine when it's cool/cold, once the truck sits in the sun or I have run the heater, then it goes bonkers. Of course, I cannot get it to do anything wrong when I am at the dealership. I fired up my truck, got the mesage, drove to the dealer and when I turned into the parking lot hitting the bump in their driveway made it come on. At this point in time I am very frustrated by it all and can honestly say I would not recommend the piece of junk to anyone. I will not play my cd's either, but at least it did that for the dealership. They are checking into what to do, seems not very many people have the unit in my area - gave me the CLUELESS stuff and will find out what to do from DC as it is a STAR part, will call me sith info whenever.

So, you're getting "Error reading disc" Nav message from time to time?? Mine is all the time. I stopped at two dealers yesterday, and both were no help. Said they never see NAV probblems with units or discs. Makes me wonder...

Ok, the plot thickens. The person I bought the NAV unit from on e-bay has been working with me to make this 'right'. He sent me another unit with NAV disc today. Well, guess what?? Same EXACT problem... "Error reading NAV Disc". I tried the NAV disc from the original unit, and get same error. So, I swap the original unit back in and try the NAV disc from the second unit, and same error! I'm about at the end of my rope here... anyone have any ideas??? I stopped by two dealers yesterday to ask for some help. Neither one were willing/able to help me. They both said they have not seen any problems with NAV units or discs, and both said they did not have NAV discs on hand for troubleshooting (which I find hard to believe) to loan to me to try. They said I would have to make an appointment for service and they would remove the unit and send it away for repair (on my dime of course). They would do no troubleshooting.

I got my unit off ebay and everything worked great first time. Satellite, cd changer and nav worked with no problem or error messages.

The disc must be the correct disc for the unit. They are not universal across the board. We had issues when the salesman would rob from one unit to use in a another sold unit with a different part# Nav unit. Or you could just have a bad Nav unit.

It's fairly unlikely you have two units with the same error. What is the PN of the nav unit and what is the PN on the disk. Also what is the radio code on the front of the unit. It is three small letters on the face. Also where are you located. There should be someone around with a disk to throw in and try.

My NAV unit works fine reading the disc when it's cool, I get the error when the interior is hot from sitting in the sun. I called the dealer where I purchased my truck, explained the problem, and they told me I more than likely have the same problem as several others are experiencing and to bring my truck in, they will pull the unit and replace it. It is a KNOWN problem by all the dealers. Since you purchased yours 2nd hand, my guess is that it has no warranty. You may be getting repaired 2nds from you purchasing source. Many times manufacturers do a repair to a returned unit and then sell them off in bulk.

I do not know if the unit and the disc have any other relationship to one another other than your NAV unit needing a particular disc that it can read. There has to be someone near you with a disc you can try, but it would seem to me that if both NAV units are the same, they should be able to read the same disc.

SAG2:

I agree, it's not likely both units are bad, however, I'm hearing there may be more issues with these units than what is hitting these lists. . The unit I bought (and the replacement unit I received) is an REC which is the 2nd gen NAV with 5in display. The original unit is back in the dash, so I could not get any info off of it. The replacement unit is:

P/N P56038646AL

S/N T H1 AA 181 5Q0062

Mfg 2005 1W June

Disc: 05064033AC

The original unit had build date of 2006 Jan, and disc 05064033AD.

Also, I'm located near Poughkeepsie NY. I went to a thrid dealer today, and

they were unable to help me w/o an appointment. I expalined my situation to them and they said they to make an appointment and they would look at it and charge me $89/hour which is kind of what I was expecting...

I can't imagine my truck or my installaion has anything to do with this problem. I'd be surprised if some feature needed to be turned on in my main computer. Others have said they just install the unit and shazam, it works. I have the NAV antenna hooked up (I get clock time thru satellite), and literally everything else works except the NAV mapping function.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

While were talking CD/Nav I have a couple of questions... .

Will the nav system fit the truck that had the factory CD changer/radio that comes stock in the SLT...

And second... when I pull a CD out of the player to change it very hot to the touch... . and often smells of hot plastic... is this a common problem with these units... I own 3 trucks and either all have the same problem or it common to all...

My 05 jeep with the nav system and 6 cd changer leaves the disc's nice and cool...

Thanks for your help. .
