I had planned on changing out the transfer case oil at 20k instead of 30K like the book says. Just for poops and giggles, I looked in the owners "user guide" just to make certain there were still using ATF4........"Mopar BW44-44 oil"....So I call my local Larry Miller Surprise,Az parts guy and he says, " Let me check...Oh yeah..It calls for special fluid and its $32.00 a quart so about $64 and change..Got some in stock.":eek::eek::eek:

About that time, my wallet jumped outta my pants and started running down the street on its own.....:--) After a short foot pursuit, I caught it and called NAPA which has no listing for the oil type....
Now my wallet is shaking with fear thinking I may have to pay more for "Transfer case oil then I would for Monte Alban Mezcal Tequila with a worm".......WTH...

Please tell me there is a alternative to $32 a quart oil for the transfer case........

AMSOIL appears to have a listing for the oil. IMO You need to verify AMSOIL meets FCA warranty specs or AMSOIL will cover it if it fails.

Are you talking to the normal full price parts counter or the cheaper avondalewholesaleparts (eBay) parts counter?

That Arizona parts guy of yours must selling the stuff made by the same FCA Executives Virgin Daughters who are manufacturing the MOPAR DEF! Have purchased it here in the Houston area for $24 a quart which you can then use a 10% off Mopar coupon from the dealer's website. With 8.25% sales tax, it cost about $47 for the pair.

I believe I paid $28 a quart at my local dealer ship. I've heard it is essentially Dexron fluid but was not confident enough to play ball.

Are you certain you have your service intervals correct?

My owners manual for my 14 (manual shift) transfer case says change every 60k miles.

Thanks. I found some on EBAY for $20 a quart free shipping in Dallas. Thats a little better.....;) JR, its 30K for towing etc etc , but 60K for normal use.

Aren't they still using ATF+4 in the transfer case of 4th gen trucks just like in the 3rd gen trucks??

If so, just get yourself any quality ATF+4 at your local discount store.

I’ll try and remember to have my Exxon / Mobil rep check out that Mopar spec Monday and see if it equals something a little more budget friendly..

This would be nice. There are no specs to cross on the bottle so it might take an inside source to know what it really is.

IIRC, the fluid seems a little more viscous than ATF4+. But it still is red.

I really wonder if they would void the warranty though as long as it is red stuff????

Amazon sells Mopar +4 by the gallon, trans will need it soon to.

I just checked the price on Amazon, 8 dollars a quart or 5 liters for 32 bucks. Not sure why it's listed in liters but anyway. Hope this helps.

Cheers

Borg Warner doesn't recommend any particular fluid. They don't sell Borg Warner fluid either. They say follow manufacturers guide. If it was that sensitive there'd have a recommenided fluid or spec, and tag it on the case, just like Aisin does. The case has no clutches. It's fully mechanical. Gears, bearings, etc. The word on the street is a BW rep said they leave the factory with Dexron in them. When I changed mine I used Dexron 5. No problems for the last 65,000 miles. My2cts.
