Need 7-pin plug wiring schema, no power to trailer brakes

Electric Brake

ROKKTECH timing sensor

Just last night when I went to hook up my dump trailer to bring it back from a work site, I plug in the 7-pin plug and NO CONNECTION to the brake controller!

All my other lights worked (signal, running, blinkers), but the little green light on my brake contoler would not come on no matter how many times I reconnected the plug and wiggled it around.

I need to find the wiring schema of the plug to find the power pin to see if power is going back to the wiring harness at the back of the truck and to see if I have a break in the connection in the trailer wiring.

Also, could I have blown a fuse? Is there a fuse in the factory wiring going back to the back of the truck?

Thank you guys. Well I tested the right/left turn signals (OK), running lights (OK), and break lights (OK). Only thing not working is the power to the break controler pin.

I check the 40 amp fuse in the fuse box under the hood on the driver's side wheel well ... thats OK, I bought another relay for the "trailer" relay in the same fuse box and installed it ... still no power!!!!

I looked under the dash board at the connections to my old brake controler and they are all conneceted and seem fine.

What else can I do? This is gonna start to cost me money if I can't make wood deliveries this fall and/or two my backhoe.

HELP!

OK, this is what I have found out so far.

The power wire from the truck to the brake controler has juice (red from truck to black to controler).

I figured that the blue from the controler should carry the current, so I disconnected the blue wire from the controler and cliped an alegator clip on it and touched the test light point to the power wire (both the power wire from the truck and the black power wire to the controler were still connected). Result was NO light ... does this mean my controler is bad???, or was my test wrong? or does it mean I have a break in the line somewhere down the frame of the truck?

Help!

you need to activate the brake controller for there to be current on the blue wire. Either have someone stand on the brake pedal or have some one grab the manual brake lever on the controller. BTW, what controller are you using?

The brake controler I have is some old thing, it just says "Commander" on the top.

But what would be the wire on the brake controler that would turn on the little green light on the controler, that indicates the trailer plug is attached? This is the one I'm trying to get working first.

I'm just scared to death thinking about a broken wire on the frame some where. That would be almost impossible to find.

I try the same blue wire test tomorrow while pushing on the brake peddle. If the power from the controller comes out the blue wire, then I think I'm sunk and my worst fears are true. :{

Same Thing

Fatcat I have the samething going on with my truck 2001. 5 2500 4X4

I have changed the controler and looked at every thing I can think of and still no trailer brake I tried different trailers still no brake control.

I will watch this thred with intrest.

Good Luck

Oasis-3 I empathise with you, I have been going nuts all day.

I drove around all morning hitting every travel trailer dealer I can think of and finally found one with a Prodigy controller.

I removed my old controller and installed the new one (pretty easy since the original one was installed with spade connectors). The Prodigy works like it says in the manual with its boste indicator working properly (b. 1, b. 2, b. 3), and the manual lever working saying (n. c. ) for no connection.

When I connect up either of my trailers I still get (. . ) which is no connection. I should be seeing (. c. ).

I am loosing my mind ... all the connections at the plug in the rear work fine with a test light.

I'm moving this to the 911 forum.

Oasis-3, I just posted the fix to my problem on the 911 forum.

The problem was the Blue wire to the trailer plug on the hitch was corroded and disconnected from the wiring plug ... nasty stuff.

I removed the old plug and bought a new one, noted where each wire goes (pin 1, 2, 3, etc... ), cut some clean connections on the wires and reinstalled the new trailer plug ... everything works great.

Get your self a new trailer plug and replace the factory one. If your in a high winter salt area like me, it is probably corroded connections.

Good luck.

It's Fixed

With the help of Fatcat's post I took a closer look at the plug area. What I found is the newer trucks are different then the 96/97 year trucks. My 2001 has a plug on the back of the hitch plug the 96/97 type have the wires going straight into the hitch plug. IF you have a newer type truck take a look and pull back the wire plastic protector and you will find that Dodge had someone test all the wires and you can see were they pushed a tester into each wire and this small hole in each wire gets salt in it and rots the copper wire away. I found the blue one was broken off inside. This link will take you to some pictures I took

P. S. Thanks FATCAT

Brake controler,

You may want to use a circuit breaker instead of a fuse in your hot wire, also if your using the black wire to feed your aux battery on your trailer you may want to put a 50amp breaker in line,i run my hot wire (#8 or #10) from the back of the alternator,i don,t like the factory wiring, also if you have a breakaway switch on your trailer and not knowingly snag the cable while messing around the back of your rig,it'll energize your trailer brakes and lock your brakes. You can get a book from anRV dealer that will help with these problems. In some states it,s a law to have break away switchs on a trailer. First gen 1993,w250 with duplex trans. 12spd.
