Ok, I just got back in town and I'm trying to catch up on over 5 pages of new posts since I left..... darn... I need a holiday... :D:D

Hey step up guys... . mystery has helped us out and it payback time..... assuming the problem hasn't been solved already. . if so, way to go guys. !!!

pb.

Thanks guys for your help. I went out on the road and hit a dozen junk yards. I came back with 7 clusters + a lot of other junk... Of the 7 only 2 of the speedo's odometers worked... I have seen this a lot in the past 5 years in a lot of trucks. . The speed needle will work but the odometer's quit... Hmmm????? I am going to have to figure out how these can be fixed... The end is near for getting new speedo's from Chrysler!! I am going to call in one of my engineering friends that worked with developing many of the electronic devices that Chrysler used... . I know that when we figure out what is failing that it will be the same problem in all of them... . I just hope we can get the parts to fix them with... ... If it is a special chip that was only used by Chrysler we are in trouble... .

The reason for my quest however was not for the speedo head but the large white housing that all the instruments bolt into... The housing for 90 to 93 is totally different

than the 81 to 89... Even the instruments themselves are different... . The plastic housing is only half as thick as the earlier one were... The problem is that the dash lights melt the housing... . The 90 to 93 housings are discontinued and will not be brought back unless I agree to buy the first 500. No way am I going to do that!

The next step would be to make them out of fiberglass on a short run... Iam not real anxious to do that either...

The last resort would be to adapt the 81 to 89 cluster... . That would be the easiest thing to do. . We would have to change the plugs on the main harness, change to the old style sending units and use a cable for the speedo . There are plenty of good 81 to 89 clusters out there to be had and after it was all put together it would look the same as it did before... ...

One of the prizes I found while out made the whole 500 mile trip worth it.....

I found this one yard in Virginia that had an 89 ctd engine with the whole wiring harness still attached and uncut for 300. 00. The guy said it had been on his shelf for 7 years... . The tag on it said 92000 miles... . What a deal!!!

Thanks again for all of your offers to help me..... I will post what we find on the great odometer mystery after we figure it out... ///Terry

BTW... . B series vans of the era use the same speedo head as the pickups... .

I know I purchased the little one first, then while it was open the larger one lost a tooth. I closed the speedo up & ran it that way while waiting for the other gear to come it. It is sitting next to the computer monitor waiting for me to install it.

I have a 91 model that I will be parting out. 103,000 and some odd miles. I know the speedometer works, but don,t know about the odometer.
