Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Need a bit more towing power

I tow a trailer which may be 12,000 lbs sometimes with equipment. I tow longer distances with the same trailer and my race car which is maybe 5500 for both. I was looking for a small bomb. I would like to retain my 7 year 100,000 mile warranty. What would be the best product that is removable? I have an automatic. Don't really want to get into gauges and exhuast. Is this possible? Bigger injectors I guess void warranty? New boxes I read about will arrive when? Thanks for answering my impossible goals. When I go from NY to the Pocono Raceway the truck is a bit dead up some hills.

If you want to maintain your 7 year ... do not do a thing. If whatever you do in turn breaks something on the truck is it the Manufacturers fault?

Guages are the #1 thing to have Bombed or not. Exhaust is essential or the first m bombs as faster in ... . faster out while maintaining Exhaust gas temps... . even loweing them. You tow a fair amount so I wouldn't do much because that trans WILL slip. However some will say an EZ or get an exhaust ... . me I say an exhaust and possibly air filter.

Towing power

I agree with the need for a little more towing power. I've done a lot of reading on this site and there are a lot of knowledgeable guys that offer some great advice as well as opinions. So here's mine -> after weighing and balancing all the pros and cons of the various BOMBs, I decided that for my needs, just RV275 injectors will fit the bill. If the EGT's get too high, then add a boost fooler. A 4" exhaust will also do that, but costs way more. Many guys advise getting guages before doing anything. Do not ignore this advice. Guages first to get a baseline. My truck has never been back to the dealer since I bought it, but if it ever does and the service manager asks a direct question, I will answer truthfully, but I won't volunteer anything either. I just don't want to get passed by a minivan pulling a tent trailer again.

diesel DOG, I tow lots OTR. My Edge card made a noticeable difference. But before I did the card I added the aFe intake filter, so don't know if it was all the card. Of course, did guages before doing anything else. Different situation, I wasn't concerned with any warranty at all. I think about all you can do is put on a couple things that you can easily switch back to original if/when you return to the dealer. And even then I hear there are tattle tales left in memory that they can detect. I think I'd do the aFe or intake filter of your choice, maybe add a card for fueling, just plug in stuff. But without guages you run the danger of heating things up without knowing it's happening. I've done the 80hp injectors and ATC exhaust manifold. Last time I ran I-70W with a stack of goosenecks, about 15-16k, just maintaining 75 through Kansas I popped 1,500 egt without even trying hard. Seeing it on the guages I backed down to 60 and still had trouble not cracking 1,250. I'm doing the exhaust right now, think this should cool me down a bit. If it knocks 300* off I'll be just thrilled. But you ain't gonna do the exhaust without it being obvious, and hardly feasable to switch back and forth. I hear some dealers install the bombs, try and find one that will do it and still stand behind the warranty. May be worth driving a ways to get to such a fella.

Buy a used Edge EZ. The odds of getting "caught" with it are extremely low, and it adds a lot of snot for towing with lower than stock EGT. I would not worry about air filters or exhuast or any of that for a long time. You will nearly double the output of the engine before you need intake and exhuast mods.

A set of 275's will be what you would want. They will give you more grunt with out worry and you should pick up a little mileage to boot. I would think that they would not void your warranty as they are an approved injector for the engine.

Diesel Dog, several have chimed in here and TMTT hit it on the head. If you really want the warranty leave it alone.



As for 275's yes it will void the warranty, they arent the stock power injectors. While it might be approved by Cummins, your warranty isnt with Cummins, its with DC. That being said I had 275's and the dealer drove my truck with them and I dont think they knew there were in there, I had no warranty problems. IMO, if you blow a block up or have serious engine trouble I bet they would check the injectors out (flow test) but if you are in for a broken cupholder you are probably ok.



I talked with the service manager at my new favorite dealership the other day about bombs. He is a long time Ford service manager and has since come over to the light Anywho, he said there are 2 types of dealerships: 1. that goes out in search of finding the bombs so they can catch you and void the warranty. 2. The blind type that tends not to see so well and unless the District Manager from DC is in the store, stuff gets done. Hence this is my favorite dealership.



My last visit I was in I told em if they could do it under warranty then great, if not I understand. I left all the goodies on the truck and I think being upfront with them mighta had something to do with my luck there. Oh by the way, he showed me how they check with their diagnostic testers to see if there was an EZ box on it, way beyond my comprehension but they know if they want to know. Know what I mean???

Thanks for the replies I'll have to give it some thought. The governor on the transmission went once and then a bunch of other problems not engine related. I understand they cannot void the entire warranty if it has nothing to do with it. Now I can't even get an HO in NY next year. I guess maybe gauges and injectors or an EZ. I guess I'll call the shop in Conn Janertty, forgive the misspelling. I dumped enough into my Vette road racing :--) The motor doesn't worry me much but the transmission does.

New 275's on eBay

I went snooping around a found 3 sets of 275's for sale. They are supposed to be brand new Bosch 275's still in the boxes. The seller is a fuel shop of some sort I believe, but I'n not sure. Here's the link to one of 3 sets for sale there.
