I just bought a truck from TX that had the cat removed from it, however, here in CO you need a cat to pass emission tests so I need a cat to put on. I'd prefer cheap and used as I only need it on there for the tests. If anyone could help who has removed theirs or know of a place that might have one let me know.

thanks alot

I diddn't think our trucks were ever equipped with "Cats". Resonators yes but cats. We would clog em up real quick like and we don't maintain the heat needed for one to catalize exhaust. Am I waaay off here?

I completely agree and I haven't heard someone argue that they actually do anything for us but from 94-98. 5 I believe Dodge put them on anyway and since they put them on at the factory I have to have one on to pass emissions.

Which I feel is just about the stupidest thing I've heard. They need to take a quick look and realize they don't do anything but get in the way and CO should put in a revision that says its ok not to have one. I called some emission places and they all say it has to have one and a new one is in the $1500 range. :--)

So if someone has one even if its bad I could use it. I only need the shell in order to pass a visual inspection. It won't change the actual test at all.

thanks

Steve

Steve - Here is my great amount of intelligence. I have heard that we have cats as well. I have also heard that we have a resagnator along with a muffler. Under my truck i have two things that are about to be chopped off, one is a muffler and i am not sure if the other is a cat or a resignator. If it is a cat... . i dont need it for anything.

I'm glad i didn't get rid of mine ... got to put it back on. The state of Nevada changed the rules.

I pounded it's guts out. Now I've got to modify it so that it's 4" in & out. :(

I bought my truck in CO and am surprised that ya'll even have emission testing. When I bought the truck one of the first things that the salesman did was put an emission exempt sticker in the windshield. hmmm, i just can't wait to get rid of everything, hehe! Good luck, James

Can you install a resonator from a 98+ to fool the emissions inspector? I saved my cat. I've also heard DC charges well over $1000 for a new cat.

JDougherty, yes it is a cat.

Don't recall who it was, but they sold Cats that had a 4" inlet/outlet. Straight-through. Somewhere in the neighborhood of $3-500.

You might give some of the performance vendors a call. Summit has cats listed for cars, but the sizes are too small for our trucks. Maybe the people that make them for cars also make bigger ones.

FYI - '96 -'98 12 valves have cats stock as a federal requirement.

edit: Sumit lists some universal cats with 3" in/out for under $100. They have pages of them and I only looked at the front page so knock yourself out here:http://store.summitracing.com/defau...htype=both&part=catalytic+converter&x=15&y=12

I went through this too in CO.

I bought a used dually to pull the dragster, and it was straight piped. When I got it home, had to find a cat, and install it. The cat alone makes for a good sound, with no muffler. Knocks the "ringing" out of the exhaust note.

By the way, an empty cat can? Most of the inspectors do only a visual, but some that i know of will thump them with a ball pein hammer, and you should hear the fiber wrap around the ceramic core deaden the sound. Just a watchout.

We are an emission station here in Denver at Cummins, and we see a lot of attempts to fool the system. Seriously, the cat does pull 80% of the CO and HC out of the gases, and a bit of the PM, so it does some good. We have tested somoe hot BOMB'ed trucks with a real cat on them, and not too much difference. If you are Real hot on upgrades, register the truck out of the front range of Denver, and you are exempt.

Thanks for the info. I will check out summit.

And sbentz its not that I would mind having a real cat its just that I need something so I can get plates without alot more money upfront. What do you mean register it out of Denver? Where can I go to do that? I don't live in any city limits just in Adams county but I've always gone over to the DMV in westminster and they will want an emissions test. Can I go somewhere else in Adams county or or you talking something way out like bennet or something? I'll definately go to a differeent DMV if that is what it takes. Will they just not ask for emissions or how do I get exempt?

Thanks

Steve

So since i know little about Cats other than they are small and furry and I need one for my truck how is it summit has one for $66 yet if I call any place to get one specific for my truck its well over 1000? Do they do something different for the cats on our trucks? Is the one from summit going to work on the truck?

Thanks

If you live in a county that doesn't require emmissions testing, you can get registration w/o emmissions certification. There is a catch. I used to live in Gilpin county where they didn't require testing, but I worked in the peoples republic of boulder. I parked on the street where the meter idiots came by and ticketed my old gasser truck for not having an emmissions sticker. I went down to the meter maid office and explained that I didn't live in boulder cnty and didn't require a sticker. They told me if I commute into their pressious county more than 60 days a year with that vehicle that it needed to have proper testing and sticker in the window. I was able to worm out of it explaining it was my ranch truck and only drove it occasionaly. I ended up just getting it stickered to avoid any more $50 fines.

Keep in mind that a catalytic converter for a gas engine is fundamentally different than one for a diesel. They are NOT interchangeable.

Got mine in the garage...

It was very restrictive; the engine ran better, more mpg, less egt, more boost (& quicker) when it found its way out from under my truck and onto a garage shelf. Never even tried to gut it, so it's full of ... whatever.

Guess I'll keep it though. You never know when the smog revenuers will want some extra tax money.

I would like to take mine out of my 94. Is there any thing else I need to do to make it run right. Just take it out and leave the muffler or is there more to it like some of the electronic stuff on the gassers.

Iv got a 99 i dont think mine has a cat. Do I? I might have one under there in a wheel well but the only things iv seen are what im guessing is a resonator and a muffler well thats till the stacks go on.

There is seller on ebay who goes by redlinear. All he ever sells are car and truck parts. He usually parts out and auctions at least one Dodge CTD a week. He is out of Hartman, Ar. He is a little pricey on shipping but the parts are as described. He currently has a few CTD items up. One of them is#2472302152 for brake calipers. Use the ask seller a question feature and see if he has a cat he would sell you.

I just went out and crawled under my 94. I didn't see anything like a cat. What is the part that swells about 2 ft. long and goes into the muffler??
