I need just a basic desktop to run an accounting program and payroll program, nothing fancy.

Matt, if you know what you need to make a computer run I would shop around on Ebay for the components otherwise try tigerdirect.com

i build my own but a good idea would be to check around whatever good sized town is in your area, theres probably a computer shop and they probably sell older stuff cheap, the local shop here puts together a couple hundred buck system that will do just about whatever you need to do in general computing, with a nice fresh operating system load up so it should run well unlike a ebay turd or family hand me down

Like CSnyder said, Tigerdirect.com has the best deals you will find anywhere. They have extremely cheap computers that you could get to run basic programs. On the front page they have a link to desktop computers, intel or AMD desktops. You can look through either.

For components, I use newegg.com. For a basic no frills rig I would go with a dell. If you add /tv to their web address you will see the computer they are pitching on TV. The last time I was going to build one for a relative, I found a dell with everything she needed including a monitor for $412. 00 shipped. I couldn't build it for that. If you have a Frys in your area, they have some bare bones ones on the floor that are in the 200-500 range, but get the extended warranty. I bought one for parts once and it didn't work when I plugged it in for the first time.
