My trucks are driven a lot, as shown by the miles on them in my sig. One of the items that wears the worst on the 2nd and 3rd gen trucks is the door hinges. Over the years I have tried different lubricants and have never been satisfied. White lithium spray lube caused a build up which attracted dirt. Not only was it unsightly it also didn't work well. Spray silicone has been the product I stayed with even though it required weekly applications. Recently I found GDL (garage door lube) made by the same folks that make Fabulous Blaster. It is silicone based but dries to a non tacky substance. IT WORKS!!!!! The drivers doors on both 3rd gens were requiring twice a week applications of silicone but after a good soaking with GDL it has now been two weeks and the hinges work without groaning!

So, what have you tried that works?

Godspeed,

Trent

Greenleaf, that is the best answer! But I wonder how many hours you had in those hinges? If they needed done, they needed done.

BTW, this GDL would work great on school bus sliding windows and latches. Wish I had it back when I owned my own bus and had a route.

Godspeed,

I use silicone spray as the "oils" can cause problems on the school bus windows. Some kids just seem to get into the oil and then the parent will call the school to complain.

I has such terrible wear on both the door hinges, the pin had worn clean through the little brass bushing and worn into the steel hinge. To rebuild them with pipe and pin was pretty easy for me as I operate a school bus fleet and have the shop/tools at hand.

Best stuff I've found is ZEP 2000 spray penetrant grease. Its clear, isn't liquid WD40 or PB yet penetrates, works in extreme temperature ranges... and actually works.
