Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Need A Good Transfer Case

I have just become a CTD owner and have made some minor

mods. I have also been lurking about this web site for some time

now and have learned from all of you (THANKS). What I have learned is that before you can built a BEEFY engine you need build a BEEFY Trans. So my question is what would be the best transfer case that I could buy? and what kind of trans mod should I do. Thanks for the help and the suggestions. .

just get a 241DHD, check out www.transfercases.com, They have the best prices i've found, and their even in California. I bought two 241's last year from them and was treated very well.

Transfer Case

Thank you very much for your responses, I am sorry for not putting a discription of my truck. I have a 1996

12V 4x4 with a Magna Flow 4" straight exhaust, AFE Cool air, and a #10,



My goal is to try and set my truck up for a marine application. I Have a 27 ft enclosed trailer with a 50 gal H20 tank and 35 gal fuel tank. I pull this to Glamis and Dumont on a reg. basis.



I would like to blow past my buddies with their Power stoke and the Duramax. But on the same token I don't want to be dumping 6,000$ in a new transmission every couple of months. I hope this helps a little. Again thanks for the feed back.

I had a discussion with a t-case rebuilder I use in Eagle, WI. today (Kodiak Transmission 262-370-8300) and he felt that the NP241, although better than the NP208, wouldn't be suitable behind a heavily bombed Cummins, unless the driver drove with great reserve .



He recommended I go with an NP205 and use synthetic 5W30 oil in it, as ATF has a habit of foaming in a t-case and leaving parts dry.

As far as the 241's not holding up is far from true, you'd be surprised at the HP and abuse they can withstand. Like F8LDOSE said, get a 241DHD and you'll be fine.

Thanks for the reasurrance. I checked out the web site and deffinatly liked what I saw and the price is right up my alley . I am going to give this guys a call a bit later in the morning. I recommend using 5W30 synthetic in the case, as it won't foam and provides a superior slip coefficient.

Does use of the 5w30 have any affect on the noise generated by these transfer cases?

I have the 241 DLD and am getting tired of the chinking noise coming from it at about 60 mph. It sounds like chain noise.

your xfer case should be sitting still on the highway (assume 2wd), if it's spinning your CAD is stuck. Mine is completely quiet all the time 2wd or 4wd. Roll you truck slowly and have some watch the front drive shaft, should not be turning.

If it were me, and I was going to do the transfercase better than stock, I would skip all of the chain and sprocket inner drive-workings and get a directly geared Atlas. Seems to be a good choice among 4x4 enthusiasts although maybe a bit pricy. Hope this helps.
