I admittedly know next to nothing about diesel engines. What I need is there someone that I can email a pic of my engine and you can set me straight what exactly Banks parts are on it and what they do (spec wise). Also where do I look and how can I tell if the truck has an aftermarket chip? I realize these are really remedial questions but I haven't a clue what the answers are soooo. :D

Sloan,

Banks is a manufacturer of after market performance parts. (some will argue the performance part... ... ;) ) If your truck is still stock, you don't have any. I'm assuming you have a 24 valves since you posted in this forum(write in your signature).

If you look next to the injection pump, front drivers side of the engine, you should see the data link connector dangling there. That's where most fuel boxes hook up and to the MAP sensor, drivers side center of the engine and the most obvious sign would be a box with two wire velcro'ed to the inside hood fuse box.

Try this link, lots of good info. http://www.dodgeram.org/support_pgs/diesel_ix.htm

That's my problem, I was gonna redo the sig so everyone could better advise me but I'm not sure what exactly I have. I bought the truck used from the dealer and it has a Banks turbo unit of some sort and a 4" exhaust. I left the truck at the dealer this evening (long story) and I'll look for the box when I get it back.

BFC I sent you some pics I hope they are clear enough. They're kinda dark, I'll get some better nes when I get her back from the Stealer if it quits raining here long enough. Thanks man. :)

Sloan,

I could only open 3 of the pics but here is want I can see. You have a Banks Hi-ram. It's a replacement for the air-intake manifold. This is where the cooled, charged air goes into the engine for combustion. I am not an authority on Banks stuff (or Diesel performance for that matter!) but I think they claim it lowers EGT's and give you more boost. If I'm talking out of my a$$, somebody please set me straith.

The two guages are TOP : exhaust gas temp (egt) . Tell you basicaly how hot the engine is running, picture is dark but looks like the probe is pre-turbo, meaning tapped into the exhaust manifold. You should see readings of 600* to 800* running empty down the highway. If you mash the go pedal it's should get hottter

Bottom gauge is Turbo boost gauge. Tell ya how many pounds of boost your turbo is producing. Stock you should see 18 to 21 lbs max. If there s a fuel box and boost elbow on the truck you will see higher readings, can't see a box on the pics.

You said you had a 4 " exhaust so I'll assume it's probably a Banks. I'm not sure if that the info you wanted but let me know if you need more. You can also go to www.bankspower.com
