Ok, it seems I'm always one step behind in finding a reasonably priced low mile HX35w turbo. I've posted a couple of times in the classifieds, but haven't had much luck. I'm planning DD2s to go along with my EZ and other planned upgrades (DTT stuff, 4" exhaust) - so something bigger than my HY35 will be needed. If anyone has one laying around that they would be willing to part with for around $250, please send me an email. Thanks!!

Gary - I'm hopeful since I've come across four or five with less than 12k miles that went in the $250 to $300 range. Much more than that, and I will probably look at a new HX40. Like I said, I'm always one step behind...

zman.....

Curious as to why you think you must go to a HX35 if you add DD2's to go with your EZ.

This issue has been driving me nuts. I have emailed off line with several credible TDR people who have EZ, stock 3" exhaust... or at least no muffler, like mine, and either 275's,DD1's, or even DD2's and they say they don't have high egt problems... . no towing, and running empty. Some have said the HY35 will handle over 300 rwhp. I have Bill K's package already... . yeeha, and am thinking of the DD2's because Lawrence has told some that the spray pattern actually provides lower egt's than the DD1's. Your input here is welcome.

I'm not trying to be cheap here, I just don't want to spend $$ for a 4" exhaust when it's main benefit is lower egt's if I don't have egt problems. I am happy with the sound of my mufflerless 3".

Also, I've been told that the larger turbo's can create lag. Again, I'm not yet convinced that the bigger turbo is needed. I want the DD2's so I can have 6 to 8 second wot acceleration that puts a smile on my face while I'm watching my pyro read less than 1200 degrees. Under those conditions now, I hit 900 degrees with just the EZ. I do not abuse my truck. Also have 4. 10's.

Thanks.

24V-DSL,

I'm basing my need for an HX35 on a couple of things. First, the Diesel Dynamics website indicates that an HX35 is "required" for 2001 automatics with the 9cm2 HY turbo (and that is without the EZ). The other reason is that I frequently tow 10k - 14k and don't want to run the risk of higher EGTs.

I'll probably do a wait and see in regards to a 4" exhaust system. I'll start with keeping the stock system and removing the muffler. If EGTs stay in check while towing, then there probably isn't a need to upgrade to a 4" system.

I'm guessing that you MIGHT be able to keep the HY if you don't tow/haul anything heavy and only have DD2s installed (no boxes).

Anyone out there towing relatively heavy with DD2s, EZ, and the HY?? If so, what kind of EGT's are you seeing pre-turbo?

Steve

a bigger turbo does help in the EGT dept and the 4" exhaust also, but you'll get more lag also from a bigger turbo---changing to the HX35 probably won't see too much diff in lag--with 275 inectors and maybe even DDI's your stock exhaust will most likely be ok--going to DD2's I'm not so sure about that--they're only 25 or so HP less than the 3's I think---try your combo out first and then do the turbo if you need to---I've got one(HX35) with 25k on it, but I'm not so sure I want to part with it as of yet(it came in awfully handy when my 40 crapped out) and I haven't even thought of a price(has a t-couple installed in the elbow also)-my. 02--chris

Low miles would be somewhere in the neighborhood of 15k or less, but I'm not stuck on that number. I'm considering one in my price range that has 38k.

Steve

Bob - yeah I called him, but he didn't really seem too interested in talking to me. Maybe I caught him on a bad day. Seems like his pricing was pretty good though. Do you still have his number?

Steve

zman... . thanks. Since you tow, I totally understand. I've also seen the Diesel Dynamics reference to the HX 35. Because I don't tow is why I'm trying to avoid the larger turbo and 4". But, I'm not going to risk trashing this truck if the numbers get scary. My pyro is mounted pre-turbo,as well.

good luck.

My HX35 is sitting in a box in the garage, but for less than $500, I'll keep it. Heck, I've been debating swapping it back on place of the HX40, but with the 16cm2 housing, and comparing EGTs. Maybe get back a little low-end that I lost going to the bigger turbo...

IMO the HY35W is getting a bad rap.

I towed a 10K+ 5ver this weekend in the mountains and never exceeded 1000F with
the addition of 275's VA and PS its spools
up quick and runs nice and cool at 30PSI

just my 2&#162

Bob... . thanks to feedback from you and several other of the HY35 "challenged", I agree.
