Need a new exhaust system

The bottom of the mufffler on my 06, 2500, 5. 9L has rotted out as well as the next pipe downstream. I'm looking at a couple entry level "performance" systems that promise small power gains (not a priority) and also better MPG's (more important). Any input would be appreciated. Salt is a concern in my area.

No exhaust is going to give you more power and better mileage unless you are running a lot more power. You may want to look into stainless systems though for your salt issues.

Prairie Dog; are you saying it's not worth the extra $ unless I really go for big gains? If so, I'd consider an OEM system.

I used the MBRP turbo back system on my 03. It seemed to last. I run in a fair amount of salt. Installation was easy and everything fit just like stock. Muffler had a decent sound and only got loud at higher RPMs when towing. Overall a good system for the price.

I had the same problem and salt situation. I went with the MBRP stainless. The fit and finish is superb but I experienced a lot of drone towing. Most don't complain but it seems hat Mega Cabs are more sensitive to it. I added another muffler in line and it is now fine. Price was great compared to others.

With the the stainless steel systems 409 will rust pit on the outside. The 304 systems are more money but are way more corrosion resistant, if appearance is a factor.

The muffler/tailpipe on my 06 2500 corroded badly. I replaced both with Magnaflow 4" stainless tailpipe and muffler. Wasn't too expensive, doesn't sound a lot different than stock.

Aftermarket exhaust on a stock, or slightly modded CR 5. 9L will net zero MPG and zero HP gains... What you gain is the ability to change the way your truck sounds, and being able to install something more corrosion resistant. Especially if you go with the 304 systems...

I installed the Silverline 304 stainless system. We do not have a salt issue around here, but when I went to order my 409 system, they did not have an E. T. A. on shipping due to a manufacturing backlog... the ANSA rep. made the call for them to send me a 304 system for the 409 price!!...

If you are running lots of extra fuel/boost, then there are most likely some gains to be had from an aftermarket system...

Thanks for all the input. I was leaning towards a Magnaflow 4" cat-back system but will now give MBRP a real good look. Anymore more thoughts will always help.

I have had the ANSA Silverline on my '03 for at least four PA salty winters. There are no corrosion issues to speak of. I'll agree that there weren't any noticable power or MPG gains, but I did see a slight drop in EGTs. There is a decent drone with this system on the QC, but not enough for me to do anything about it.



Whatever path you take, I would strongly recommend spending the money at a local truck parts place and getting the wide band clamps. They won't crush the pipes like the traditional U bolts so you have a chance of taking things apart if you don't like how it sounds.

Flo-Pro 4-5" turbo back with MBRP tip rocks. Won't do too much for power, but it will sound good and last.

I vote for oem. I bought the best stainless that you can buy and it still rusted, even in my Ca climate.



I didn't like the rusty look so I ended up having a muffler shop bend up a brand new system from scratch. I took out the muffler and left the cat in place.



Sounds good, no drone and minimal rust compared to stainless and it was cheaper than a S/S aftermarket exhaust.

I still run with my catalytic converter and installed an off the shelf muffler from our local truck shop. It's roughly 30-36" long, about 10-12" diameter, and has 3 expansion chambers in it. You can drop an orange straight through the muffler, yet it's as quiet as stock. Even at my power levels (450-500 @ rear wheels) I don't ever notice a drone of any kind.

I've heard that magna flow is very loud. The Aero 4040 is nice, too, from what I've heard.

Either way after getting it insatlled clean the entire system of grease and oil with solvent and paint with heat resistant BBQ paint.

Does wonders for rust on the outside.

Not much you can do about corrosive exhaust gasses on the inside especially if the exhaust doesn't get up to temp and burn out any moisture.

Believe it or not most exhaust rots from the inside out because of this.

The Magnaflow on my truck sounds pretty much the same as stock... no drone.

Summit Racing offers a nice stainless system... mine's been installed for 230k and is still shiny. Another option...



If you want a rust proof system, look for 304 or "antimagnetic" stainless... most systems (including the OEM) are low graade stainless and eventually rust.
