I have a 1990 d350 with the getrag in it that is now junk so I need a new transmission. I have a 727 that I was thinking of building up or I know a guy with a nv4500 but its a 4wd transmission. What would it take to make the nv4500 a 2wd transmission and if I want to build the 727 what parts do I need to get and I mean are all 727s the same or do I need diesel 727 stuff specificly? Thanks for the help guys. If it helps any I'm going to use this truck for racing mostly.

Gas and diesel 727s are 2 different animals. Won't even bolt up to your motor. Besides that, you'll kick yourself going from a 5 speed stick to an auto with no o/d. The 727s they put 3. 08 gears in the rear end to make up for the lack of o/d. The 518s and the Getrags got 3. 55s or 4. 10s. If your truck has 4. 10s and you put a 727 in, you'll be topping out in the high 60s on the freeway... foot to the firewall.

Looks like you live about an hour from me. I'm in Muskego. I happen to have a 4wd 518 that still moves the truck, but has some issues. I'm looking for some parts to swap a Getrag into it, and you should have a few of those parts on that truck of yours. I need a bellhousing, clutch, flywheel, and hydraulic setup. If you're interested, we could maybe work out a deal for my 518 with the transfer case, even though you don't need the x-case, it would give you the yoke you need and you'd have a 2wd with a low range. Either way, if you don't want any of the stuff for your getrag, I'd be glad to take it off your hands for you... .

Hey Tippin pm me if you would be uinterested in selling the 518 4x trans my project truck is 2x n I need a 4x trans

No 727 into a non 3. 07 truck! Even with the 3. 07 I can only get to 75 MPH wide open and howling. That is why a 5 speed is going into my truck. I have lived with the 3spd long enough.

Oops. ;)

If it any consolation though, the crew cab does have a 24 spd! ;)

Did you put the 24 speed in? :--)

I've been looking at an Eaton 7 speed and really drooling. I know the bellhousing and clutch are easy, it's all SAE, but what about the driveshaft and transmission mount, not to mention the transfer case. I was planning on running a divorced transfer case.

Yes, I put it in. Custom mounts, custom driveshaft, and custom T case. :D

It is easy to do, and you do not need a Eaton. That ended up too complicated to install in the end, but I did base the theory off the Eaton.

I used a base NV5600, add a Gear Vendors for overdrive for each gear, and rig the NP205 to run a 2 hi and 2 low (now you have 2 gear ranges) and bingo! You have a working 24 spd all from Dodge parts and it sounds and acts like a real 24 speed. :)

Sorry also for hijacking the thread. We are WAYYYY of the original post! ;)

Well, since I can't ever stay on topic anyways..... ;) I was chatting on-line with a guy near me who put a 13 speed Road Ranger in his '96 Dodge. Pretty sure he said the top gear was . 76 over. Too much shifting for me! :-laf

I can't remember all of the details on the 7-speed I was looking at but it had a . 73 over, and low was about 11 to 1.

I thought about some of the other transmissions (more gears), but I didn't want to deal with having to install an air system just for the transmission.

I was a little wrong, I was rereading his PM and 8th direct is . 76, and 8th over is . 65. He says he should be able to do 125, instead of 100 mph. :-laf

I didn't ask him about the air, I never thought about it. A small electric compressor should work for that, it's not like you are running it much just for shifting. On the other hand, I added horns and air bags on mine, so I needed a larger compressor. ;)
