Hello first genners,

My brother just bought a 92 2500 4X4 5sp (getrag) ST w/170k miles on it. It is time to do some improvements. He is not planning on doing serious toying sub 6k and doesn't carry much in the bed. He is looking for a flat bed if anybody knows of one cheap in the pac north west. here are the questions.

1. Suspension- We are looking for a minimal lift (0-2 in) that makes the ride better. I think Skyjacker is an option but want to hear any feedback or opinions on both springs or shocks.

2. brakes- we are looking to put EGR's carbon kevlar rear shoes w the one ton cylinder's and probably the front carbon kevlar pads as well. has anyone bypassed the anti-lock system and put in a proportioning valve? Again looking for feedback and opinions/options etc...

3. power- I think we will go easy on this(getrag) w pump timing, old smokey power pin and a 12 cm housing. I did this combo on my 89 and it worked very well. I went from 18lbs of boost to 26 w/ the power pin after the 12cm and pump timing. I need to know if their are any pump experts or shops in the Missoula, Montana area that can help (not for free) he needs to do guages as well. what tach do you guys recommend? Again opinions and suggestions required.

4 hitch- This truck doesn't have a reciever hitch on it  does anybody have a class 4 reciever hitch for sale or do you know where to get one?

Any other suggestions or comments would be helpful.

Thanks a million from both of us

With 170 K on her, I would suggest a set of injectors assuming the stockers are still in there. At 130K mine ran sweet, but even better and smoother with a set of new upgrades... ok more power too. . :D Try the new PDR 190s for a "mild" improvement.

I pulled the plug on the anti lock box behind the glove box... . got tired of looking at the warning light. Stops fine from what I can tell.

Have fun.

As far as the brakes go, I think that ditching the ABS and putting in an adjustable prop valve is a great idea. I want to do this to my truck, but it's way down on the list of priorities :( . Try it out and report back :D .

I replaced the stock front pads with some $12 napa specials and the aluminium wheels went black after a few days. Spent about too much money on a set of OEM's and the aluminium wheels do not go black anymore. They wear very well too. I suspect when you upgrade the rears then braking will be very nice. I also adjusted the rod between the mc and booster. This took up the play in the pedal, and the brakes come on nice.

My 91 has a reciever hitch on it that will be removed. I think somebody welded it on though. If you are interested I will take a closer look. I will be fabricating a flat bed with integral bumper/hitch for off roading for it.

I also suggest some injectors. I have one of the last sets of cheep 185's and are very happy, I'm sure the 190's will produce similar results. A little fuel screw tweaks and it will run real nice. I am very satisfied with my stock turbo and current fuel settings. I run 30 psi of boost.

I have not done anything with the rears, but have been very happy with the skyjacker softrides on the front of my truck. I currently run an old school kelderman air ride out back.

Sorry that these are in the wrong order.

Thanks for the info guys

Does anyone know who make a 4 in exhaust for a first gen. I have heard their is someone is doing them.

Oil recomendations for the getrag?

What tach is everyone using?

Still need some shop info for the Missoula, MT area

or instructions for tweaking the pump.

thanks again for the help

My brother and I appreciate it

Call Rip Rook for exhaust. I got one from him and am very pleased.

www.sourceautomotive.biz.

The POD injectors work great too. With the starwheel at the top and the smoke screw backed out the smoke is tolerable and they make good power.

Rip Rook makes a 4 inch that everyone swears by find it here:

I made mine, not nearly as nice, but it will make due for now, and it was a lot cheaper.

I use Valvoline 5-30 in the getrag, and pull out one of the top PTO cover bolts so you can overfill it by a quart, this will help longevity

Autometer makes a tach and wiring harness (sold separately) that will wire right into the factory tach harness that should be hanging somewhere near the e brake release (if I remember correctly on the location). You can get both from: www.piersdiesel.com

Don't bother with taking it to a shop to have the pump tweaked, check out Pastor Bob's galleries to familiarize yourself with the VE

https://www.turbodieselregister.com/user_gallery/displaygallery.php?userid=5168

And then learn how to turn it up here

Hope this helps. If you have any more questions don't be afraid to ask, we're not as mean as some of those 3rd genners :-laf

AutoMeter has no tach's that will interface with the PCM on our year models. Isspro is the one that does. If you want AutoMeter you have to use the one that wires into your alt. :(

As far as the antilock brakes. Just unplug the box behind the glove box like stated before. Now on the larger rear cylinders. Do a search on larger rear cylinders with my name also pluged in. You can find some good reading both pro and con.

Don't worry about it AR. When ever I get done with my deer strike problem. I am going to be working on the AutoMeter problem with a good electronics person I know. :D
