Looking to add more horsepower via a tuner to my ctd. However, the more horses, the more costs. Especially in the driveline side of the truck. Can someone help me with a combination that I can apply without having to tear out all the stock transmission components and add high performance ones? What is typically the max before stock trans parts have to be altered? Or the fuel pump needs to be boosted. Just looking for a reliable (safe) application. I do tow a 22 foot boat, roughly 5k lbs. (not a big deal even at stock). But would like to beat those Chev,s and Fords at the stoplight, or on the freeway from time to time.

thanks

Well, I don't know what a "tuner" is, but there is a wide variety of possibles to add horsepower to the Ram. Several types of performance boxes, pressure, timing, or duration. Some do a little of all, some just one or two. It only stops when your wallet is empty. You won't get too far with that stock transmission. 50-100 HP before you start slipping the stock torque converter. Several types of injectors make a big difference, but again, the wallet and stock parts will limit how much actual performance you see out of them. And then there is the wild card. There is no "safe" performance BOMB. If you break something, YOU MAY BE YOUR OWN WARRANTY STATION. And just a word of caution, the scanners that the dealers have now are ruthless. You can't hide anything without leaving a fingerprint in the computer memory. And this is info from a dealer tech that is a good friend. But it's up to you. It's your truck, do what you want to enjoy it anyway you can. Just remember, you have been warned. No matter what any salesman may tell you, ANY BOMB may lead you down the path to being your own warranty station. Welcome to the forum... ... Sarge

First off -- Don't do anything with a pyrometer so you can see the pre-turbo exhaust gas temp.

If you don't want to upgrade the turbo and transmission, go with a mild box like the Edge EZ. The EZ will give it a good kick in the pants of about 70 horses. I've seen the torque increase anywhere from 150 to 200 or so on the EZ. Anything more than that and you need to look into turbo and transmission upgrades.

If you decide to upgrade the turbo and transmission, stack the TST box with the EZ. It's a great combo. I have a 6 speed, but most people tend to agree that DTT trannys are one of the best. As far as turbos -- there are a lot of them out and many differing opinions. Do a search for "Doug's Report" and you can find detailed information about the various types of performance boxes available.

Have fun and remember - after the power upgrades, repeat after me: "I AM MY OWN WARRANTY STATION"

Edge ez is a safe improvement anything more than 70hp requires transmission upgrades torque convertor and valve body at the minimum also install a pyrometer at least pre turbo full set of guages is what I would recommend with power module boost pyro and trans temp

Thanks for the info Guys!

Looks like I'll run stock until the warranty runs out.

In the mean time, I'll be putting money in the "Piggy" bank for future fun.

Now I have to find a big Piggy!!!
