Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Need advice on how to flush out auto transmission fluid

Hey guys its getting time to change the filter on the dodge Im gonna go to magtech trans pan and I want to switch over to amsoil fully syn fluid, how can I get out the old fluid any ideas and whats the part number for napa trans filter so I make sure I get the best one thanks alot for the help!

unhook the return line that comes from the transmission cooler.

put a big bucket under it and start the engine.

i think the oem filter and gasket are the best one's to use.

Iceman, doesn't this hurt the trans running it out of fluid? I assume you wait till it stops flowing.

I went to my dealer. They have this cool machine like a blood transfusion device. It removes the fluid chases it with a special solvent flush and then refills the trans with fresh fluid. It was quick clean and gets it all. I paid about $119. I did this at 19k miles. At 30k I'm putting the deep-sump pan on and at that time I'll do the filter with extension. This machine has gauges that read out if there is any back pressure or blockage. The service Mgr tells me if I do the "closed" flush and purge every 20k and do the "pan drop and filter" every other interval I'll save a bunch in the long run. Watching this machine do the "function" was pretty cool.

the dealer and his machine are a good way to go but insist on being in the shop when it is done . a lot of mechanics will put regular atf in your truck and keep the AMSOIL for themselves.

About that bucket thing:



Drop pan, change filter.

Refill with new ATF, to proper level.



Take the cap of of 3 qts ATF, THEN unhook the cooler line going back to the transmission.



Start truck at idle, dump the three new in as the trans is pumping the old out. Or watch for color change.

Should be pretty close.

Reinstall lines, check for proper level again.



A lot of quik lubes have the machines now,watch them close and double check their work.

Hey Sled Puller, i like your plan for the fluid change, but can you (Or anyone on here) clarify one thing, when you say start the truck with the line disconnected and let it pump out the three quarts, should i run the truck in NEUTRAL or PARK??

I too am getting ready to do this same thing, with a new double deep pan. I am going to used reqular fluid in it thought as I will probably be doing some more stuff to the transmission this winter an don't want to wasted the expensive fluid in four months. Is there a way to drain the converter (DTT ) with out running the truck?? I just have a bad feeling about running the truck, sounds like a disaster waiting to happen for me...
