Need Advice!

I'm ready to do a T. C. and V. B. upgrade. My truck has 97,000 miles on it, should I shell out the big bucks and get the trans rebuilt or could I get another 50 to 75K out of it. I realize getting it rebuilt would be best so I guess my question is how many miles can i expect to get out of an auto.

P. S. The trans is working fine right now.

How many miles? It depends on how bad you abuse it!!

Seriously, call a few vendors and ask questions. Go with the one you feel most comfortable and satisfied with. I recommend Goerends.

My friend, the subject of auto trannies is a very sensitive subject for some of the folks on here. Some would say overly sensitive, but thats a different story...

Anyways, so far you ahve gotten good advice and no p*****g contests as of yet. It's good advice to call around and visit websites as they have most of the contact information you will need. Most all of the companies are good... .

I am not sure of Goerend's website so maybe one of those guys can give you a number/website. But all the ones I listed and more are good and most of them will give you good advice. As I said, Suncoast is what I and several friends here use and we all love them. But pick what is easiest for you as far as installers and price, you won't regret it.

If you had 50K on the trans you could probably get by with just a TC and VB upgrade but with almost 100K it makes sense to have the internals inspected and the front drum seal upgraded. The transmission has to come out to replace the TC anyway so why not rebuild while it's out? Most people are happy with their upgrades if they go with one of the vendors most commonly seen on this website.

You can get about as many more miles out your transmission as you want to get. The more HP developed by the Cummins and used by the driver, the more strain on the transmission. I put in an early-DTT valve body a few years ago, and that was a definite improvement over stock. A double-deep Mag Hytek pan and some other ATF cooler mods keep the fluid nice & cool. That's a must for long transmission service life. No TC yet, but then again, I'll probably go the "whole enchilada" within the next year. My transmission works very well now, and lock-up locks up (though I don't tow that much, and what I have hasn't exceeded 6000#).

The biggest questions: How much power do you want to send to the wheels? How much money do you want to part with?

My transmission was stock inside. I had put a Mopar Performance deep finned aluminum pan on it , and been running synthetic ATF in it . It was overhauled at about 100K . It had been slipping for a while. The torque converter clutches were a little on the toasted side , and that was all that was wrong with it . I just felt that since it wasn't going to last forever , I would choose the time and place to overhaul/upgrade it .

It's homework time! Call 'em all!

I agree with whoever said it depends on how badly you abuse it! I got my upgrade at 107,000 miles, I got a complete up-graded re-build. When they cut my TC open, I saw that my TC clutch could have lasted longer if I had babied it, but I didn't want to baby it, and more importantly I didn't want it to puke out on me and have to settle for some anonymous transmission shop's idea of a rebuild.
