Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Need Advice

I finally bit the bullet and purchased the 3kGSK and a #6 plate. I got a copy of Piers Secret instructions for adjusting the back of the gov. The 3kGSK was easy, the plate change is easy, the back end for the special adjustment becomes the problem.

All my friends tell me I don't have hands..... I have Hams on the end of each arm.

I finally got the back plate off and with a mirror I found the adjustment to be made... ... I even got a 10mm deep well on the lock nut... . then the process ended..... HOW DO YOU ADJUST THE SCREW?????

Let's see, one hand holds the mirror, one hand holds the light..... no, it's the light in the mouth so the second hand can hold that little short screwdriver... and with that hand in that little space I can't see the mirror, the flashlight just makes my hand easier to see, like that was really a problem in the first place.....

So how does one go about adjusting that screw ? Is there a special flex shaft tool? Sure wish I had one !!!!

Stock plate back in and disappointed! :{

I was lucky and didn't have to adjust mine. Are you sure yours needs adjusted? They useually don't need adjustment. Just checking here, you have to hold the throttle back and also lift the shutoff solenoid to the up position to check the adjustment.

The plate position is a don't care. It's probably located ok. Just put the #6 in 3/4 of the way forward & test drive. Just don't get too close to the bumper in front of you before you floor it to pass.

I usually do the job by feel only not lights, smoke or mirrors. I think the #6 might need a little adjustment but a 5 or 4 usually is ok. M Barnett has some good advise as well, just take your time and do it by fell, sometimes you need someone to hold the throttle on so it is easier to line up your wrench and screw driver.

Try this...



... Use the deep socket to break the nut loose



... Remove the socket and grab the end with vise-grips



... Put small skinny screwdriver through the socket



... Place socket on nut and turn screw with screwdriver



... Remove screwdriver and vise-grips and tighten nut with ratchet



... Check adjustment and repeat the above several #@%$@#@ dozen times till it comes out right



... Drink beer!



It is a PITA to adjust it but once you do it a few times it's not that bad. I've even gone back and made minor adjustments without removing the AFC housing just to see if there's an improvement.

Ah Ha... . the old screwdriver in the deepwell socket trick. . . . I like that one. I'll try it in the next couple days. I really like that "drink beer" part. Thanks BHALE. And special thanks to all for the advice. I knew the TDR crew would come thru.

I had the same problem with a #6 plate and I just used the feel method with a stubby screwdriver. It was a little time consuming and I went the wrong way with the ajustment first. Then, I went to far and had to back it back down. Ran great but it had mucho black smoke. I finally got it right. My knees hurt afterward. It was all that crawling around on the engine that did it.

Now, the pump is leaking at the shaft seal. That's a MAJOR PIA. The pump has to come off and sent to a pump shop and then the pump gets reinstalled . All for a . 50 cent seal.
