:{ need advise on a hit and run tonight. I'm told a Ford Expedition hit my no longer cherry 85 crew cab. I have a vehicle description of the Ford and a possible plate number. Only problem is I never put insurance on the crewcab since I got it from Sam. In Indiana I hear if ya get pulled over and don't have insurance you can get your drivers license suspended for 90 days. Being as I have a CDL license, I can't lose my license. Anyone know if its the same when someone else hits your parked vehicle??? Should I call this in or just cry cry cry :{ ? Very sickening feeling driving home and seeing your cherry 20 year old vehicle in this condition. What do you guys think?

I'd call it in, I'd also call every shop in town to see if they would let me know if an explorer comes in for body work.

Bill,

I also have a CDL and I can tell you that any incidents that involve a motor vehicle, even though not involved with commercial driving, do affect your license. I don't know about the legal end of your situation, but I had a similar incident concerning insurance.

I was sitting in stalled traffic for about 15 minutes. As soon as it looked like we were going to start moving, the car next to me slammed into my truck. Not only was he drunk, but he had been sitting there the whole time with his wheel turned hard over towards me. So when he hit the pedal, it was an instant impact. The guy pulled into a parking lot and took off on foot. I called the police and helped track him down.

It ends up that the guys insurance paid for my damage, but my own company (which I WON'T tell you was Allstate at the time) charged me with an "incident". That put me as a high risk at the time, so they raised my rates.

Not sure what your recourse should be, but tread lightly until you can figure out the big picture. Good Luck.

call it in?

You seem to indicate that your truck was not being used on a roadway at the time of impact, parked even. Maybe if you had hauled it to a show and that was why it was where it was, then your insurance requirment would be different. I am pretty sure it was hauled to the spot where it happened. Yeah come to think of it I saw it on the trailer about an hour before that.

Funny how the authorities can make a crime out of being a victim of crime. And the pictures show a definite crime against your truck. Hate for you man.

Bill was the truck parked at your place or had you driven it somewhere else?

If it was parked at your place I would call it in. Even tho you don't have insurance. A hit on a nonmoving vehicle shouldn't go against your CDL's. If they ask why it isn't insured. Tell them it has mechanical problems that needed fixed before you were going to put it on the road.

If you need a dually bed we can work something out on my bed.

I had a guy at work that got side swiped totally the other guys fault. He had just bought the truck and had not registered or insured it yet. He lost his licence for 90 days. He had a CDL but didn't loose his job as we do work for a decent employer.

I would think about it for a while before I turned it in. Also if you didn't turn it in right away you could also get a ticket for not reporting.

But if it was on private property and had been sitting for a while I would report it.

Thanks guys, looks like I'll be eating this one. It was sitting on the street. Had driven it earlier in the day.

I will be getting insurance on both vehicles tomorrow. Can only be cheap for so long. Now I just need one of those obsolete 1st gen dually fenders  :{ .

Put insurance on it, just cheep liability, then call the cops. See if you can go to an online insurance company and get the insurance, then print off the proof of insurance. Call all the area body shops too and ask them to call you on any expeditions in for work.

Hit and runs suck! About the only thing to do is find the truck that did it on your own time, find the owner, make sure he was driving it and then kick his tail! My truck is still carring damage from a hit and run about 7 years ago! I would still lose my temper if the person responsible fessed up to it!!! #@$%!

Start parking your trucks in the yard too.

Sorry to hear about your wounded truck. Good luck making it sharp again.

Michael

if it was parked turn it in, insurance only applies if you are driving. sometimes you may have no choice but to park on the street, they can't fault you for that.

I've got no idea if they are available or not. I have never had a dually, let alone a first gen dually. Somebody has to make them, I'll call my buddy at a body shop about them.

Have you called the cops yet?

Michael

dually fenders

Last price I knew of on a fender was over 600 dollars. MysteryMan mentioned that he had a set of moulds for the early (good ones) dually fenders. I don't know if that means he can get some made or not.

Scrounge around the salvage yards and you can probably find something. I found a complete bed with fenders that was very reasonable so I have a very nice set in blue but since I have three running duallys I didn't plan to part with'em. I do have one that a GOOD fiberglass tech could use part of yours and mine and make to look good. If you don't find anything closer to home, PM and we will do something.

James

What is it about these fenders that folks like to knock them off. I had a 19 year old kid crash one of mine. I found out who it was and made him pay big time. By the way, have your axle checked for possible bend. Mine was. Cost to the little jerk was over 7500 dollars.

If it was just parked on the side of the road i wouldn't worry about calling into the police, i would've called it in right when it happened. When i was in college, i was asleep and my roomate came in and woke me up and said hey someone just hit your pickup. i went outside and my bumper was pushed into the fender but popped back out. Well i went inside and thought about it for any hour and was about to call the police when someone knocked on my door. It seems the lady that backed into my pickup was a police officers g/f and he made her come and track me down. I went outside to look at her brand new Jeep Grand Cherokee and i felt sorry for her, it punched a hole through her tailgate i could put both fists through. Guess i shouldn't have let them off so easy but i ended up getting $800 out of the deal for nothing wrong with my pickup. Well i hope everything works out for you, it should if you have all the info you have.

Chris

Hey Bill, sorry about your truck. If you have a good insurance agent he can backdate the paper work for you . Jeez officer, I just put it on the road this morning!

No Insurance?

Your luck sounds a lot like mine. Never, and I mean never, will I be without insurance coverage again. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Sorry to hear about that, Bill. Really is a shame. I have mine parked on the (very narrow) street as well and that H&R possibility runs through my mind every now and then...

Hope you get thru it ok.

Nick

Bill,

First to whine to the cops gets his way. Dont call it in. Unfortunately, even though it was PARKED, from what you told me about the ordinances in the People's Republic of T. H, they will make it your fault simply to avoid leaving the donut shop and being less of a drain on the city budget and waste of tax dollars. Remeber Stoddard County? I was run off the road, stopped 3ft from a 15ft deep drainage ditch, and I did a month in jail. Much as I hate to say it, just eat it this time around, and keep it in the yard. Too bad about that.

Daniel

Plate trace came back as 87 blue oldsmobile. . not a Ford expedition:mad:. I passed a red FE on the way to work, glanced quick enough to see he had a busted out taillight on pass side. Too much traffic for me to get turned around to verify the plate. Monday will get a copy of the police report. I plan on finding that FE and taking a pic of his stolen or incorrect plate, while calling the police and letting them know I just found the vehicle that hit me. I have insurance on both my vehicles.

In the meantime... anyone got a lead on a set of dually fenders?
