I've had 5" exhaust on my truck for 2 year's roughly and have run straight straight piped, and two different muffler's. I have never had that good turbo whistle that you hear at idle or cruising. My stock turbo or the HTB2 I have now just don't have much sound. The straight pipe sound's awesome but got to be to much after a while. How come some truck's sound so good but mine just sound's deep w/ very minimal whistle. Any suggestion's, thank's!

I had some good sound with my BHAF and it got quite a bit loude with the Amsoil dry filter. Do you have the cowl hole for your air filter arrangement? I have read that allows more turbo sound to get out!

I hear plenty of turbo from under the hood, I'm looking for the sound out of the tailpipe, and I have none?! My truck sound's like a jet up front! I can't figure it out? Thank's though!

Im thinking of going 5 inch, anytime soon, just dont want to have alotta growl, and no whistle?

Anymore 2nd gens 24v's running this kinda set, please chime in...

I don't know about anyone else, but I don't think you get much whistle out the tailpipe. The only whistle I ever hear out of my tailpipe is when I shut my truck off and can hear the turbo "wind down". All my whistle is from under the hood, I have 4" exhaust, but I really don't think the difference will matter. All the other trucks I hear, also have the turbo whistle from the hood and passenger fender area.

I used to have a 5" turbo/tail exhaust before the stacks. Never noticed a decrease in turbo whistle with it. Lost a lot of turbo whistle out the pipe with the PDR 40. Have more with the HTT, but not a whole lot more at idle.

Do you still have the silencer ring in the turbo?

it's due to whatever muffler you're running... if you've got a "packed" muffler, it'll kill a lot of whistle.

I prefer straight pipe with plenty of sound deadener inside the cab. nothing lets the turbine shine like straight pipe! :D

I will say that a quiet big truck muffler will allow a lot more whistle than most of the "performance" mufflers for these trucks

I have had 4" straight pipe that dumps in front of the rear tire, total exhuast pipe length is maybe 8ft. When its running you can REALLY hear that hamster wheel turning!!! Then as soon as you give it a little bit of throttle the whistle and sound is deafening in my little apartment complex:-laf:-laf

I dont think it was that loud when i just had the HY-35 and stock 3" straight pipe, the HX-35 definitely made the whistle louder.

Maybe I'll try a different muffler or something. My boss had a '99 with a 4" MBRP kit with muffler and the stock HX35, and that thing whistled real good out of the tail. My turbo does'nt have a silencer ring and is real loud up front. I'd just like to hear my truck whistling at idle from behind. What's a good sounding big truck muffler name that does'nt look like a 55 gal. drum hanging underneath. I guess it's not really a big deal, I just love a good sounding cummin's, and want mine to sound that good. I think I might go to a straight pipe again for a while. Heck every thing I own has aftermarket "loud" exhaust, why stop!:-laf Thank's for any more suggestion's or muffler choices.

I have a 5" turbo back and with the silencer ring out you can hear the turbo like mad out the tailpipe, especially after running for a while and then lettin it sit there and idle.

i am running 5 in. straight pipe (straight pipe meaning straight pipe... no muffler) from the 4 in. down pipe. when it was first installed i had lot of deep semi sound coming out of the pipe. then i added a 6 in. chrome stack (25 inches long) at the end of the pipe. i still hear deep semi sound but i also hear turbo now. it sounds so darn awesome. hope this helps.

i dont know if anyone else agrees with this logic i have, but i have seemed to notice that maybe alot of it has to do with your turbine housing size, if you look at semis, tractors, etc. . they have larger exhaust housings, unlike our pickups which have small housing for faster spool-up. call me crazy but i might be somewhat on to something:confused:

it does have a lot to do with turbine wheel pitch and size and also with the turbine housing. a tighter housing will have the wheel turning faster at a lower RPM, so it will whistle more at idle.

most modern 18 wheelers have smaller turbine housings than they used to for emissions reasons.

the sps/14 turbine I had on my red truck and will be putting on my new truck had the best turbine noise of anything I'd been around or run personally. the silver bullet I ran, you could barely hear the turbo in the exhaust.

I think a larger diameter pipe helps too
