Fuel Filter Interval Seems Really Short

Our 2015 Ram 3500 dually has 900+ miles and the DEF gauge is still on full. We have not towed our 5th wheel as yet but I am concerned that the gauge might be bad and we don't want to run out of DEF.
Any suggestions/advice would be appreciated. Hugs, Di

It might not actually move off full until you get down to 3/4. I noticed when my tank was 1/2 full it read 3/4.

Mine did not move off of full for 1500 miles, all non-towing miles. It is at roughly 3/4 now. I have been told the sending unit is not a sending unit like in a fuel tank because DEF freezes. It senses DEF at various levels in the tank the tank and probably interpolates (i.e., guesses) in between.

Not sure all tanks are underground. Just assumed they were, just not as deep as fuel tanks. They have to lay the piping under the pavement, so I thought they would also bury the tanks.

My gauge also stays on full for a long time, but after it gets below 1/2 it starts to fall fast. I would not worry about it much, unless you are headed WAY OUT in the boonies!! After all all big truck fuel stops, Auto parts stores, and Wal Mart stock the 2.5 gal jugs.

Take a jug with you and run it! You have 200 miles to find another jug when it runs out anyway. :)

My 13 takes almost 2,000 miles of driving before the gauage will start to move when driving bobtail. Take your trip if in doubt bring a jug with you...

I just bought a 2015 and the gauge gas hardly moved with 1000 non towing miles. I think it takes a while for it to go down unless we are towing.

Towing my 16K fifth wheel, I will get about 1100 miles on a fill. On a 3000 mile trip to Orlando last October, I used 7.5 gallons. Towing my 6k trailer around here in the Ozark Mountains, I get about 2600 miles on 5 gallons. I will get over 1000 miles before the gauge moves off full. I go until I get the warning to refill, then add 5 gallon.

I would not be concerned. My 2015 Bighorn 4X4 long box was at 2200 miles before the gauge started creeping off the full mark. I am now at 3700+ miles and it is only down about 40% from full. It hasn't been hitched up for a heavy tow yet, though.

Average MPG so far is 19.8 with 68RFE transmission, even carrying around about 400# in the bed most the time (mostly highway). On level highway out of the mountains, it will cruise at 65+ at 21-22 MPG.

Enjoy your rig!

My gauge took so long to come off full that I thought it was broke. The tank was nearly full from the dealer and I added 1.9 gals to top it off. At this time I have 8230 miles on it and according to mileage keeper have burned 478 gallons of fuel. My DEF gauge is just now into the red marks but still has not given me a warning yet. I’m guessing it will be soon though. I plan on NOT filling up full again because it can go bad in the south Louisiana heat faster than I seem to use it up.

Hope this helps.

If they don't have a float, is it a set-up like a trailers holding tanks. that has indicators spaced full- 2/3-1/3-empty? sounds like this is the way it reads. And takes a long time to reach the next contact.

Thanks for the reply's. I think it moved just a "scosh" today and tomorrow we have a hundred mile trip so we should start seeing some movement. Hugs, Di

Just an update. Apparently when not towing this 2015 really doesn't use much DEF. We hooked up on 6/2 and we feel it did really well. We added a 2.5 gallon jug when the gauge showed just below a half and it put it a bit over the full line so I'm comfortable that all is working as it should. Hugs, Di

Mine did the same. No biggy, when it gets close, fill it. what I hate is going to a fuel stop, go to put in DEF, but can't because I have to buy fuel first. THEN, when I put in a gal or two of fuel so I CAN put in DEF, the nozzle barely fits, which in turn lets the DEF spray back at me cause there is very little room for air in the tank to escape. THANKS!!
