Hi,

I have a new 5" pacbrake remote mount exhaust brake. It needs 60psi to close. So I need a on board aircompressor to power this somehow. I have a small air tank, and I do also have a complete 5. 9 p pump and holset gear case aircompressor setup, That I could attempt to fit. It may be a tight fit, depending on what vacuum pump I run, or if I swap to hydroboost brakes. This would get rid of the vacuum pump. Any ideas? Either the cummins factory setup or a 12volt aircompressor that puts out a lot of air... ie if you use 60psi to activate the exhaust brake and you use it very often ie traffic , I imagine it will run low on air very fast. .

Thanks,

Deo

You don't say how small your tank is, but I think the air usage would be pretty low for cycling the brake.

I have an Air Zenith and a 5 gallon tank for my air horns. I also have a brand new Mopar brake that I want to modify so I can use air pressure instead of vaccuum to operate it.

If it's any consolation, I don't have an air tank on my Pac Brake and it works great. If I'm on a long downgrade with it engaged it just cycles the compressor on once in a while to maintain the pressure at the cylinder on the brake. Never had a problem yet.

I am interested in installing an engine driven air pump too (see thread in "other") and I didn't know about the gearcase set you are referring to. Do you have a description or better yet a photo? I wondered about converting my brakes to hydro-boost; is that very hard? Do you have a link, or is it in the Holset web page?

thanks,

Well from what I hear the engine gear case driven pump will get in the way of the drivers side engine mount, and vaccuum pump etc. The air compressor goes in the gear case, the power steering attaches behind it. Then the vacuum pump would go after it. . if you just had a powersteering pump / hydroboost pump it may fit. . its a full size big truck aircompressor. . the frame rail may need soem notching etc. .

Later
