My truck overheated and there is a 10 inch crack in the engine block. It's a '99 with less than 60,000 mile on it. I live in North Alabama (Huntsville area) and am looking for a good repair shop and/or a replacement engine.

Thanks,

Bob

Sounds like you are dealing with a 53 block failure. Do a quick search on the subject and you should find quite a bit of the information you are looking for.

Some have had success with a lock 'n stitch repair for the crack. While, others have gone with a complete replacement. Again... there is much discussion on the board under "53 Block".

Good Luck

One option to consider if funds are short is complete replacement from wrecked truck. Junk yard or auction will net one with about 100k for low bucks. RC

Thanks, I got lucky and my local Dodge dealer (Cloverleaf in Decatur, AL) went to bat for me and called Cummins and they have agreed to replace the engine. All I have to do is take the truck to the cerified Cummins dealer in Birmingham, AL, About 100 miles away, and pay for the labor to R&R the engine. They will give me either a new short block or la long block depending on how bad the engine is.

Fantastic - it truly is grreat to work with good companies that take care of their customers. You seem to have a good dealer also.

Just so your primed, that Cummins labor and gaskets cost me about 3k.

I picked up my truck last Friday and I've put over 400 miles on since then and it runs great. The bill was $3600. 00, but that's still a lot cheaper then the minimum $10,000. 00 if I would had to pay for everything. They replaced the block and anything else that need replacing with the rebuild including a new water pump and serpentine belt. Oh yea, the service manager said I had the infamous block #53.
