I need new upper and lower ball joints for my 89 D250.

It failed state inspection today after I did a complete brake job on the rears:mad:

The tech showed me the slop in both wheels and he even greased them to see if it would tighten them up a bit, but no good.

I tried the search here for part nos. and nothing as far as specific numbers. I was told there is a heavy duty one and a regular one, what's the difference:confused:

What about the Moog problem solvers. What are they?

Sorry for all the questions, but I want to get the old girl in shape so she'll pass inspection. Also needs a muffler and tailpipe (any input on this too would be great)).

Thanks for your time,

Phil

Can anybody help me out ??

I see there have been no replies as of yet, but 20 views by others.

I definitely need both upper and lower ball joints on both sides and prefer to get Moog parts. Are there any tips on the install?

This is for my 89 D250 2WD

*NOTE* I called the NAPA dealer here this morning and ordered two of the #2601048/upper ball joint(screw-in type) and two of the #2601084/lower ball joint (press-in type). These are for the "EXCEPT 4,000 lb. axle" which I am assuming are the correct ones. I looked at the sticker on the "A" pillar and the front GAWR was listed at 3,830 lbs. I am also under the assumption that the axle rated for 4,000 lbs or over would be on a one ton truck?

If these are the correct ones I ordered , could someone please verify this for me.

Thanks,

Phil

Phil,

Mine is rated at 4000 lbs for the front and if I remember right there is a difference between the 4000 and the other axles. Your best bet is to go by the sticker on the door or run the VIN to get the build listing. The moogs are probably the best for bucks out there but depending on use even they are borderline. I did the lowers on mine because they were both totally shot and the uppers were still good. I have a lower gone again and the uppers are ready for replacement. I also changed the springs to the super duty moogs to get ride height back up there. I think the ball joint out again is due to the heavier springs, heavy tires, and really rough roads.

I had a local heavy suspension shop reccommend and order the parts as the parts stores didn't seem to know what was up for sure. I don't have the numbers anymore but I remeber they reccomended the moog stuff for all the fixes. Good luck.
