I am looking to upgrade to a bigger turbo, my current turbo has become a restriction and I want to limit the smoke. I tow a 14000# trailer every day for work and the EGTs are higher than I can tolerate. Can someone give me a suggestion based on their experience. Thanks for any help.

are you towing with your edge on or off? The injectors might be a little big for towing but you should be able to control temps with the box off. The 315's might have a little to do with it when towing that heavy also but not sure on that.

Try smaller sticks. I had 110hp in there and they were horrible for towing my camper. Put in 75's and much better. Didn't really notice any loss in power either. All that black smoke is unused fuel not making any power anyway. Smaller sticks will burn most of the fuel and you'll feel the same power.

What are your boost readings? Is the turbo laggy? What setting are you running the Edge on while towing? I've run multiple combos on my rig towing 15k# & I can help you out.

Thanks for the replies. I have thought about smaller injectors but I have the power bug. I usually run the Edge on 1 or 2 while towing, boost maxes out at 32lbs, usually runs in the mid 20s, Edge turbo spools a little slower than my HX35 on the lower settings.

I would caution about going too large on the turbo.

I have DD2's (80hp) and a Smarty. I was running a KSB1-B and it was very laggy. I tow 13k 5er. I lived with it for 4 years, babying it, working at keeping the rpm's up ~ 2000 with downshifts, OD lockouts, etc.

I had it rebuilt to a HTB2 (62/12) and love it. Smaller exhaust, Smaller compressor, way faster spool, actually more boost. I'm back to enjoying towing again (4 years later).

Call HTT and talk to them. They have a good website about sizing the right size turbine to fit your needs. Talk to Brandon and he will help you get a good match for your hp and turbine.

Again, I would caution about going too big on the turbine, not fun working your butt off trying to keep it spooled, and because of the $$ involved you do not want to just "try" that turbine and then decide it is not right, and then "try" another one.

I think you may have a boost leak if you are only seeing 32lbs. The edge BB is suppose to be a Airwerks 62/12 I thought. Am I wrong?

I definitely do not want to deal with excessive lag. I might look into a 62/12 turbo or smaller sticks, I want to keep the power that I have now but the smoke I once loved is becoming a problem with my local authorities. The Edge BB turbo is a turbonetics turbo and does not have a waste gate. I have checked for leaks and everything seems OK.

I had a boost leak from the plate the intake horn bolts to, under the injector lines, the bolts were finger tight.

I wouldn't worry about a power loss with smaller injectors. If you're making enough smoke to bother the cops, then you're not making all the power your sticks are capable of. That smoke is unburnt fuel. If you're not burning it, then it's not making horsepower. If you go to smaller injectors, you will probably burn all of the fuel they're injecting, thus making all of the power they're capable of. This will most likely be very close to the power you're putting out now. You might even notice a bit of mileage improvement if you're lucky and easy on the pedal.

I have checked thoroughly for boost leaks and have not found anything obvious. I dont think the Edge turbo will give much more than 36lbs of boost. I have been looking at new sticks but cant decide on brand.

I would upgrade the turbo, 110hp sticks aren't big. I get no smoke without a box turned on & I have 150hp injectors. To much smoke means not enough air.

Cummins724 what turbo are you running? I was leaning toward a HTT HT71, or a SPS 62/12

I have the first High Tech Super Stock 62/71/14. I have highly recommended this turbo to alot of guys who got the SS62/71/13ss & they have said that it is too laggy, but I spool it fast & tow 15k# through mountains with NO egt problems at all running sw2, 2x5. I think we have narrowed the problem down to a bad batch of housings & 12v aren't spooling them too well.

Sage advice

That is some of the best advice you will find on this forum!

I just learned that lesson the hard way. . I bought an HTT 66/71/16 turbo and thought that would be good for me... No Way! I couldn't spool it, all I did was smoke and watch the EGT gauge...

I sold it and am now running a Phat shaft 62/65/12 and cannot believe how well this turbo works for me! It spools instantly and I can just barely touch 1,000 degrees on the EGT meter...

It is NO fun having too big of a turbo for your application...

If in doubt, call Brandon at Industrial Injection!

Cheers, Bill

Keep it small for towing, unless you don't mind a lot of shifting to keep the RPMs up over 2k. If I towed more often, I'd probably even downsize what I currently have. But with that said, my HTT 62/12 has been doing very well for my use.

Sorry I haven't replied sooner, I have been busy with my new son(11-15-07). Thanks for all of the suggestions. I am still not sure on which turbo to go with but I have more info to help me. I will contact HTT and II and pic their brains.
