My new step brother has a 2004 (305/555) 4wd, 2500. His local shops are telling him he needs new calipers, pads, rotors, and brake lines.

He called and asked for some aftermarket calipers. Any good ideas?

Also, if anybody knows a decent shop around Engelwood Fl, please let me know.

Thanx in advance

My 04 went 160K miles before it needed brakes... . but your step brother needs to check the pads himself first... . most shops over estimate the need for brakes to sell the job... .

We always rebuild the calipers, turn the rotors if needed when we install new pads and bleed and flush the system... .

Most of these trucks don't need new rotors unless their scored or damaged from the pads running down to the metal...

Aftermarket calipers will be rebuilt calipers either with or without pads... .

Personally it sounds to me as if your step brother is being oversold more than he needs... . I've never had to put a brake line or hose on a truck during its life unless its been damaged... but only an inspection by an honest guy can tell you... .

My best example is my daughters Tahoe was in at a tire shop(a large chain here 135 stores) and told her she needed all that you've mentioned above. . She called and asked me to send her the parts... which I was happy to do... . but I first asked for a inspection because I told her that her habits when she was young told me that she must have a lot of pad left... . a close inspection found 55-60% LEFT and they were just trying to sell her work... .

I'm personally glad we're in the HD side of the industry... . hope this helps...

NDornacher,

Thanks for the offer. I guess he went to another shop and got it done. He got new rotors, 1 new caliper, and new pads. The total was $450.

He is far from the diesel nut the rest of us are, he just likes the reliability of the truck. Hopefully there are some good shops in your area that he could use. Let me know if you have any I could reccomend.

Thanx all... .
