I have a 1999 Ram 2500 diesel 4x4 Quad Cab. The front brakes last about 30k miles... big surprise to many of you I'm sure. I'm thinking about retrofitting the factory rotors and pads, but have not seen any mention in the forums on caliper conversions. Any ideas from the folks that have blazed this trail ahead of me? I've seen that many of you say to keep away from the drilled rotor and stick with the slotted... I'll do that. But that leaves the small factory rotors. Any ideas on aftermarket items or retrofits?

wow, only 30K? Are your rear brakes doing their job? I now have 140k on my front brakes (Carquest mid grade) and they are only about half gone. I also tow about 50% of the time. These are over the road miles with an e-brake so that helps but still I put 50k on the ones that were on the truck when I got it and didn't even fully use those up being mostly town driving and no e-brake. Sorry, I don't know what a good aftermarket solution is. I remember there is one but I can't remember the name and can't find a bookmark for them.

I have been using EGR for about 3yrs now. I am pleased with them. Last year I added the stainless steel braided lines. Give Glenn a call.

30k..... holy hell. that sounds awesome to me, im going about 6 to maybe 10k at BEST. hell sometimes i just plan on chainging brakes when i do my oil, and yes my rear brakes are adjusted, think its about time for that egr rear disc conversion

Are your Caliper bolts/pins sticking?

It's very important to keep the pins well lubed.

I've had to lube mine as often as 1000 miles.

When the pins become gummed up and sticky it causes the brakes to drag and get hot.

This is the beginning of the end for our brakes.

I have a cover that keeps the water and dirt out.

PM me for details

Thanks

What on earth do you guys do to your brakes so they die so fast, I just don't understand. As I said above I now have 140k on my current Carquest's and they are only about half gone. I have not lubed them since install over a year ago and they still stop straight and don't drag. The calipers must be sticking bad or something. Jack the front end up and if the wheels don't spin free there are problems. Long ago I took a file and sand paper to all the sliding serfaces to make sure they were smooth because I was having some brake pull isues.

Auto verses Manual trans & brake life.

CumminsPower98,

You have a manual trans that allows you to down shift to slow down.

Those of us with automatics must use the brakes to slow us down.

Advantge Manual.

That's true, I didn't notice or think about that.
