Hey Guys,

Im looking into getting a good cb setup and wanted some advice.

I want a cb with sideband, so im between the galaxy 959 and texas ranger TR- 396F, Any reason i should go with either one over the other?

As far as antenna, im thinking either a wilson 5000 for the roof, or a full lenght radio shack whip mounted on the bumper, which would be the better setup.

Anything else i should consider, SWR meter? which one?, what should i run for wires,. . Any other comments or help would be appricated?

Thanks guys.

Either radio is okay. Wilson 5000 is a GREAT antenna. maybe look for a radio with built in SWR and just have it checked against a meter. Buy the cable from Wilson. BUT... Look at other mounting ideas Hood, Stake Pocket etc before drilling a hole in the roof.

Check my rig pictures for other ideas too. Heck I still use my old FCC issued callsign KADW-3559

Remember buying the CB and then waiting 3 to four weeks to get your license before you could use it? how much was it, $35. 00?

I don't kow much about the radios, but both are respectable names. I'd probably go with a Galaxy if it were me... just because of the following they have...

I have a Wilson 5000 Magnet-mount on the roof of my truck... about the best antenna you can buy IMO.

You can have a shop SWR your antenna before you even have a radio... or you can buy them... found a few on eBay once in a while. I think the one I have is from Radio Shack, but I'm not sure they even make them anymore.

I debated this also. In the end, I received the following advice:

If you go with the stainless whip, you will have a hole in your truck somewhere to mount it and it may work well. If you go with the Wilson, you won't have a hole in your truck (mag mount) and it will work well.

This may not apply to you if you plan on using a stake hole mount. I was thinking of mounting the whip on the rear bumper.

I've got the 5000 mag mount and it's the best antenna I've ever had. It's removable and replaceable with a cap if you want to take it off for car washes, garages, etc...

I have several pics of the install in my reader's rigs. I got the antenna from 12 volt . I had the antenna upgraded with better coax. They sent me a sample and there was a big difference in the quality between the wilson coax and their stuff. Heavier shielding and wire covering were the big differences.

VCI 728 - Australia ... had to pay AU$15. 00 / year and was always on the look out for the CB inspectors that would take away your pride and joy if they found you had tampered with the power output . . LOL ... the good ol days.

The license would not make one bit of difference. Even when they were in effect. There were many unlicensed people using CB's. The only unlicensed people I know of getting caught were base units running with lots of power.

Never heard of a moble unit getting caught.

Hey, Mine was KADT-(forgot the numbers) but I still have my copy of the license so all I have to do is look at it. I need a new cb though to finish off my equipment.

I miss the old days. Talking "skip" Honolulu, HI to Johnanaisburg, (sp)South Africa from the old upper/lower fixed mobile off a K-40. Those were the days :-laf . Now live in the DC Metro area where need "power" just to talk a few miles. Hello Uncle Charlie! 5 Watts ain't enought any more! Not if you really want to be heard. Got my "boots" on a switch if I need them. Tested and working well with my SP Diesel box!

First license was kfl1268. When renewal time came I was given KBMB 4068.

As for my setup, I mounted the radio on the right side of the column and am using a thru the window Radio Shack antenna.

Going to change to a Wilson mag mount.
