Off Roading Need Colorado Jeeping Recommendation

I was hoping to return to the area and do Engineers and Imogene Passes in our 2nd gen 2500. Will I be able to pick my way through as long as I add some skid plates? Or will I just get high centered?

Although we have done essentially all of the San Juan 4x4 trails several times in smaller 4WD vehicles since the mid-1970's, we did the Alpine Loop & American Basin (Silverton/Engineer Mountain/Lake City/Cinnamon Pass), and then went over Ophir Pass in our Dodge 3500 with an Outfitter slide-in camper on board last August. As long as you take it easy and have some reasonably decent off-road style tires, you should do just fine. Of course you will have to wait until the counties in the area get the trails cleared of snow, which can sometimes be rather late in the season.

SOme really good stuff out of SIlverton. We did a RV trip around Colorado and when we stayed in SIlverton (couty park) there were like 100 RVs all from Michigan pulling modified dune buggies.

I agree with Ouray and Telluride. Another good area in Colorado is South Fork. From there go north to Creed and all the surrounding mining areas.



My wife and I were in Silverton, Ouray, Telluride, Wolf Creek, South Fork and Creed, Colorado as well as Chama, Taos and Red River, NM last fall to see the golden fall colors.

My wife , Son and I stayed in a great campground outside of Lake City Colorado... They offered Jeep rental and the trail to Alpine Loop started right outside of the camp... I cant remember the name of the campground, I will look it up and post later... It is with out a doubt, the best offroading location for jeeps that I have been to in 30 years of offroading... nothing in California, Nevada comes close... the scenery and wildlife are great and my son loved the campground as it is kid friendly...
