Death in the family.

Its getting hard to get a job out here! I have started lying on applications on what I use to earn, I think the powers to be see I have no chance to make what I used too and just pass me by.

Me and my wife was talking about it the other night, what they don't understand, Because I can't convey my explanation really on the Resume and applications I do online is that the money I made before, came at great expense to me and my family. I would be away for extended periods of time, I don't expect to make the same here at home.

I have a baby girl on the way in two months and don't care to travel anymore. Just looking for a company I can stay with for the next twenty years.

If any of you here in Florida know of something please let me know.

Thank you.

Wish I could help and I feel your pain. I just lost 1 day per week and was put on hourly instead of salary. That may not sound bad, but now I can barely pay the bills I have. I have a 10 month old boy and 7 year old girl. My daughter doesn't understand why we can't do the things we used to do just a couple of weeks ago. Sometimes it really sucks being an IT guy. There really are not many IT jobs here.

Reading this thread makes me both sad and furious. Sad that one member is unemployed and others are facing lost income and furious because it is all unnecessary and due to bad government policies.

I wish you the best brother! I know I'm looking at selling stuff off, got my truck listed now and really hate to sell anything I have worked so hard to get. but I guess I can get it back another day, I think I'm scared because of becoming a father in these uncertain times, it a little unnerving.

keep your chin up man.

North Dakota is Booming and prosperous... ... . Lots of jobs in many sectors up here. We have bucked the national trend of job losses and budget deficits. Just throwing it out there for anybody not afraid of work and money. :)

Not sure what you are looking for but have you looked at CSX. The railroad is a crazy schedule but if you are looking for stability and better than average benefits package see if they are hiring. I work for Union Pacific and they require you apply online, not sure if CSX requires the same.

Yes, I have applied to CSX online, position was in JAX, FL track worker, no word yet. thats the problem with online applications, two positions open, two thousand applicants. I understand thats how they do business though.

I have applied to Haliburton for oil field work and many others, if anybody has openings in there company where you can reach someone that is in charge of hiring directly. this online crap is getting old.

Thanks,

Guy.

Pretty much anything in the energy industry is hiring, Oil fields, Coal Mines, Power plants, Wind tower projects, Power line workers, Lots of construction work of all types. We Have BNSF RR here and they hire pretty regular also. There are jobs here in pretty much any sector of work you can think of.

I heard on the news that Job service of North Dakota has over 40k jobs listed for the state. Not bad for a state that only has 600k total population. Oo.

Most of the energy industry jobs in the area average $70k+ a year.

If relocating is an option there is always Gillette Wyo for the massive coal mining industry there, they are always in need of people there.

Guy,

Track work is pretty demanding, did you check in transportation? Not sure how they do business but we have had several come from track maintanance into our ranks due to cut backs in that department. You may be required to travel as a conductor or engineer but you are not gone very long usually just overnight. I understand the long list of applicants, used to if you knew someone it helped but alot of RR's stopped doing that.

Usually folks have the best luck networking through family, friends, church, clubs
etc. Get the word out and you'll come up with something.
Best of luck

You don't want to put salary information in your resume. That information should come late into an interview.

Also, keep it short and sweet, and make sure the resume is tailored to the job you are seeking. HR people who have hundreds of resumes to read will skim your resume.

Should have a well written cover letter that clearly explains what you are looking for, and why they should hire you. Have more than one person check your resume and cover letter for typos and clarity.

I've found gigs through Craigslist, and LinkedIn. Networking is very important, as many folks get a job because they know someone in the company they are looking at. I have gotten jobs and made valuable contacts by posting a partial resume and cover letter on Craigslist. Leave your name and address off for this and let employers or head hunters contact you and only when you are sure they are legit, give them a complete resume with contact information.

Oh, and target the companies that have the jobs you want, and learn as much about those companies as possible in preparation for an interview.

Are you a skilled tradesman(pipefitter, weldor, plumber)? The U. A. locals as well as the Boilermakers hire white card(experienced) journeyman. Most of this work does require traveling. GregH

Good point GHarman. I forgot to mention that also, With 7 power plants An oil refinery and Coal gasification plant and 2 ethanol plants all within 65 miles of my house here most guys work locally for maybe 6-8 months a year and pull in nearly 6-8k a month. They could travel and work year round but choose not to with the wealth of local work in the summer. I have 2 neighbors that are boiler makers making High $30s/hr with unlimited overtime. Most plants and mines here pay in the $30+/hr range also.
