I have a 2500 2wd long bed. I love my truck. I have owned the since it had 60k miles on it. With the exception of a problem I had the auto transmission (bad problem slipping and rebuilt by the dealer shortly after I purchased the truck) it has been flawless. I have two questions I need advise on:

1. Although the transmission is fine, I am worried I will have problems down the road. What alternatives do I have if and when I need to replace it? I would love to go with a manual, but I suspect it is impractical, anyone done that before? What are the costs?? If I stay with the auto I would like to get one that is known for longivity. Any aftermarket ones come to mind? I sold my trailer so towing is no longer a real factor anymore.

2. I am approching 120k miles. I believe that is a major service, correct? Any places in or around Atlanta that any locals could recommend to do the service? I prefer to stay clear of the dealers and go with someone who has serviced this trucks outside of the dealer network. I have never really serviced the truck other then regular oil changes, air filters and fuel filters.

Thanks all in advance for your time.

I don't think you really need to worry all that much, the 47/48RE is really a good transmission. The only components that really need upgarding are the valve body and the convertor. I have a "96" with 180K and a TST #6 plate. Sometime after I installed it the clutch started to slip some in the convertor. At that point I purchased a "Transgo" shift kit from Suncoast and found a very good local shop that could modify the valve body. That was at 90K and I tow quite a bit. I figured I'd be changing the convertor after it started slipping but it been fine.

I keep the transmission serviced at least every 20Kmi. with new fluid, filter and check the band adjustment as well as "Lubeguard" additive with refill.

When I have to rebuild I will install a beefer low stall convertor and stick it back in. That's about it... .

He has a 47RH not a 47RE. A valve body upgrade and a TC upgrade would most likely make ya happy (unless you get bit by the BOMB bug). Suncoast I believe is down there in the SE area.
