I have a 2000 2500 4WD and I am almost 100% sure I need to replace the front wheel bearings. Anyone that has done this job please let me know how easy or bad it was. Are there any hints and tips that would make the job go a lot easier? With 120K on the odometer should I replace the ball joints and U-joints just to be on the safe side? Or for the time and effort would it just be better to have a repair shop do the work? Thanks for the help.

I would do the universal while your in there but once you have the hub assembly out and use anti sieze on your reinstall, getting the new unit out for a future u-joint repair won't be so bad, i think. My Y2k hub at 135k was rusted to the knuckle pretty good and I had to fab a plate puller device and use lots of penetrating oil. I did the u-joint while i was there. The hub assembly for my y2k was a dealer only item. Might find one online if you can wait. If your not into freeing stuck bearing assemblies, find a shop that has done it before.

The easiest and probably the cheapest as well, would be to remove the 4-bolts that are located behind the rotor/hub, and replace the thing as an assembly. Dodge sells this and probably some other parts places as well. The new piece will get you a new hub, rotor, bearings. The poster before this one was right in suggesting you replace the u-joins. Good Luck.

Thanks for the help. I have just the hub and bearing assembly and not the rotor as well. I just happened to see a 2500 at the dealership with the front axle apart and it doesn't look too bad to replace. The price for the hub and bearing was not pretty. $327. 00 for each side. That hurts. I am going to try another dealer and see what I can work out in the form of a discount. I guess I really don't need any special tools right? Does the bearing and hub assembly just slide off the axle shaft easily? Thanks again for the help.
