Quick Pyro Question?

Other then the bad word of GM diesel being the problem, I have a 93 3500HD with the 6. 5, manual trans. It has 130K and there is no power left at all. Its a rollback and I need to re-coop, re-gain, re-find the lost power. Where should I start, who should I call, what shall I do as I have to keep it for another year. You can call or email me as I need to find answers quick. 410-287-5240 -- email address removed --

Outside of the obvious (trade it for a Dodge:p ), I would suspect the fuel pump. Or other component in the fuel system. From what I understand, the fuel system in the 6. 5's were problematic at best. So that's where I'd start.

OK... here's a rundown of things to check.

1. Oil pressure switch - runs the fuel pump - supply, not injection.

2. Fuel pump - the supply pump to the engine, not injection pump.

3. plugged fuel filters

4. check turbo. It should turn effortlessly AND have small amount of motion side to side. It should not move in-out perceptibly.

5. Ok, you exhausted the easy stuff. It's now time to do the injection pump.

If you have 130K without having the injection pump rebuilt, you exceeded it's "good" life long ago. By getting one put on and timing it right, you'll find the truck probably runs better than it ever did before. I would also suggest you replace the injectors. 6. 5 injectors don't last long, and it won't be too long before they start causing problems. . like knocking.

I left one off... obstructed return line back to the tank.

of course, if the pump's badly worn, the return fuel flow will exceed it's capacity, build extra pressure in the pump housing, and cause the truck to run very sickly.

There, I covered the obvious... good luck :D

Easy

Drive to a very tall cliff. Remove radiator cap and push truck off of cliff. Drive Cummins Powered truck of your choice under radiator cap. . install... there ya go ;)

Seriously all kidding aside good luck with your problem

Time for Pump and Injectors...

I don't know much at all about the GM 6. 5L's, but I used to sell parts for them. Most of the older GM and Ford diesels need a set of injectors and a pump when you get much past 100k mi. I know many will dispute this, but like I said I used to sell these parts quite often. I think the above posts have covered the other fixes pretty well. Good Luck.

ps- Or you could use that $$$ for a down payment on a Dodge.

Not sure if a Dodge 3500 frame and suspension would handle the rollback bed with wheel lift. I have a 3500HD now and I am looking into a International 4700 or Ford 550. The new truck is still a year away so I need to get this 6. 5 going.

I would suspect an injection pump. My neighbor has a 95 GM diesel and he said his was weak on power and would shutdown

on occasion. He just drove it close to home because he knew one these days it was going to die. It ended up dying about 2 weeks ago and he finally got GM to replace the injection pump

under warranty after complaining to the regional rep. about it.

The truck only had about 60K miles on it.

the pump on the early 6. 5s 92-93 are simular to the 6. 2s and arn't as problematic as the later e-pumps, usualy when they start to die, your truck will start loosing power, about 100 miles later you wiil be calling a tow truck. good luck bob
