Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Need help finding a relay

I installed a Pac Brake a few weeks ago and the only problem I can find is that the brake comes on while sitting idling in park. If I have the brake in operation and stop, putting it in park to let the turbo cool down the exhaust brake keeps it hot. I know I can turn it off but if I don't think about it Iamb defeating my purpose. The normal Bosh 30 amp relay is a normally open unit. If I could find a normally closed relay I could tie it into the neutral safety switch. That way when I shift into park the relay would energize (opening the contacts) and shut off power to the vacuum coil under the hood.

So here's the question where could I buy a 12 operated coil with N. C. contacts. 10 to 20 amps would be enough current carrying capacity. I checked Radio Shack and they have the N. O. 30 amp Bosh but nothing else.

I would think you could find a "universal" type (with terminals both for normally open and normally closed) at an auto parts or electronics store.

Nope, not around here. They have no idea what I'm talking about. An electronics supply house would be in the way I was thinking.

It's a single pole double throw automotive relay. An electronics store should have it for about $11 or so. Radio Shack doesn't have stock them for some reason. If I want one I buy it at a local electronics supply store.

If you have a NAPA store in your area, they will have or can order one. If they give you the "deer in head lights" look ask to look at the catalogue. bg

You will likely get that look too. I would say NAPA would be your best bet, or any automotives store should be able to order you one.

Your best bet would be to get a part number before you talk to someone.

The likelyhood (based on my own personal experience) of someone at one of these stores knowing anything more than that a relay makes a clicking noise is slim to none. I may be able to rape one off a machine at work, I'll look around and let you know sometime early next week.

I've bought several at Napa. It needs a the marking for "87A and 87B". one is the output for open and the other for closed. You wire it appropriately for your needs.



Search for a relay wiring diagram online and several audio websites have the exact input and outs. I'll look for you also.

When you search make sure it's an automotive relay. Not some sort of PC mount, dip, or reed relay.

When you go into a NAPA, ask for the "LIGHTING" cataloge. My cataloge is item #N2001 and on page #190 it lists several relays. This will prevent the unpleasant "deer in the headlamps look" It also lists relay kits and the wire connector for the relays.

The relay and socket assembly shown below IS a Radio Shack item,

and has a PAIR of 10 amp double pole single throw contacts - which means that at rest, there are 2 closed circuits - and when activated, the coil pulls in, and both contacts go to the OTHER closed position - so you can use it as a Normally Open, OR Normally Closed, depending on how you wire it.



Mine shown is for control of my pusher pump - and I can get you the actual RS part # if you need it...
