Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) 15 second quarter mile truck

Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Banks Plate Question

Got the 3GSK kit, AFC spring kit (3 clicks less than full rich with soft spring) and a #10 plate (1/8" back from full forward) installed. Truck runs stronger but I have new symptoms.

1) Idle RPM is now 200

2) EGT will peg the gage 3/4 to full throttle

Other then those two things the only other item is my clutch does not like it (I kind of figured that). When cruising at 55 and I goose it in fifth I can hear the clutch give a little squeal and under hard excell the engine sound is solid but the truck feels like is pulsating (I think the clutch is slipping).

My Internet provider sucks so I can’t search for more than a couple of minutes before getting booted off line. I go booted off twice trying to right this GGGrrrrrrr

So I have a couple of questions.

1) how do I adjust the idle? should I re-adjust the GSK springs or up the idle on the back of the pump (where ever that is)?

2) what is the best position for the plate to keep the most power and to keep the EGT's down?

I also have installed the boost elbow. Boost now is 32PSI, high RPM noted in second is 3600 rpm. I did not hold the power on to see what the high rpm would be in 3rd due too high EGT's. truck will roast the tires through second and 3/4 of the way through 3rd (in 3rd the engine held 3000 rpm and burnt rubber till the truck caught up to that rpm). 4th and fifth pull hard although not as hard as 2nd and 3rd, where when I had the stock plate full forward it would pull just as hard in in all gears.

Any comments to help with fine-tuning will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Tom,

My idle dropped significantly when I installed my Governor springs. I tried raising the idle via the pump linkage but that seemed to be more for fine adjustments and I was looking for gross adjustment (I had to keep my foot on the go pedal while stopped). So I went back in and tightened the springs up about three clicks and that did the trick. You may need to tighten yours even more. Only one way to find out though.

As far as egt's go, I think you might want to move that plate back a little. My temps could spike almost immediately before I installed my mega-cannon. Now the temps climb much more slowly.

Thanks Mike.

I moved the plate back to the middle and took up four turns on the govener springs. Idle is a little lower than it was before the mod but I like it so i'll leave it. Temps will still climb into the 1500° range but only at full throttle. I dont think I'll be hitting full throttle very often. other than that the temp will get to 1350° when I go to pass someone from 55MPH in OD with 3/4 throttle. I need to hook up my trailer with a load and see how my temps do.

Think a 16 cm turbo housing would help the temps??

I like the mod so far. Just need to get used to the extra power. Its seems to like to spin the tires easy now.

Ok now in my PM you stated that your #10 was in the factory position. Here you say its 1/8" back from full forward. I think you need to move your plate back :-laf

Mine is about stock position (middle) whenever I get a 16cm housing I plan on moving it full forward. Right I think I'd just peg the guage if I did that:eek: :(

I'd try moving the plate back for EGT's

and for the idle you definately have the governor springs to loose

The 16cm housing helped EGTs a lot with my #11 plate and the only way to get much over temp is to slide the #11 all the way forward and hook up the TT

With my limited experence I agree with whats been said. The idle can be a adjusted with the keepers on the GS. I had to lossen mine just to stop the "hopping". So sensitive is the petal. Piers said to put the keepers in the stock position to start. That didn't work for me. Mine are set right out on the end of the post. Some trucks are more sensitive to the adjustment than others. Get it to 100 rpm of your set idle and then go to the rod setting.

The # 10 plate should be set 1/16 inch forward of center to start. I set mine there and left it. Just fine for me. As far as the EGT's go, nothing will help there like a 4" exhaust, larger housing, and the AFE Mega filter. As I have stated in another post, these things lowered my egt's 200*. Plus, did I mention the sound. Unreal. I raised the hood the other day and started the engine for a buddy of mine, bought a Duro-Max, and when he left he was still grinning. Now he's trying to trade an 02 Max on an 03 Cummins.

NOTHING SOUNDS LIKE A CUMMINS. :D
