I've been running the Banks muffler for about 70k miles now and at highway speeds the noise in the cab is almost intolerable. I've even wrapped my entire exhaust system with header wrap.

Is there a muffler solution that offers a good sound out the tail pipe but keeps the noise in the cab at a reasonable level? I've heard good things about the Donaldson but thought a 51" muffler would be too quiet out the back. Any thoughts on the Donaldson or other manufacturers?

Thanks

I replaced the stock on my 05 with an MBRP and havent noticed any more noise in the cab.

With the windows down I hear the pipe but not when they are up.

Hope this helps.

I had the Banks exhaust as well on my '03 HO, and also found the noise unbearable. Their advertising of "no drone" is a joke.

My solution was to buy a 30" MBRP muffler and install it 10" after the downpipe, I guess where the cat would have been.

It still sounded good on WOT, but was tolerable and almost quiet while cruising.

If that didn't work, I was going to try an Aeroturbine, but the MBRP was cheaper so I tried it first.

Good luck!

When I went to the Banks muffler after a year of being straight piped, I was sure it was as quiet as stock? Does Banks make more than one 4" muffler?

I had the same problem, an unbearable drone between 2000-2200 rpm.

I installed an MBRP in front of the Banks and it helped but the drone is still there but the drone rpm range is less.

I would still like to find a better option, I still want it more quiet in the cab.

There are a lot of similar posts to this. Some searching might give you some more ideas.

I have a MBRP muffler near the down pipe and a Rok-Tech muffler. It sounds good in the cab and better on the outside. No drone.

CSilkowski,

I have the 51" Donaldson and it is nice and quiet, with a nice deep tone outside the vehicle. I don't notice it in the cab at all when driving--I haven't towed with it, but I believe other members have and found it very nice. There is a model that does not have the internal perforated cone that the Donaldson has. I think it is made by Cummins or for them, and it is the same size/dimension but with straight through flow. That part# should be 86131m. The Donaldson should be part# mo90544.

Thanks to all. After extensive research, I ended up ordering a 40" Donaldson. Since I have a short bed, it seemed the 40" (vs. 51") was a good solution. Should arrive in another week after which I will have installed.

I too tried the 40" Donaldson. I found it was a little loud going past walls and such with the passenger side windows down at highway speeds. For me, that is. It was not louder in the cab, just outside frow the tail pipe. Just FYI.
