HELP!! Engine heating problems

I installed my manifold last evening and came across a minor issue I need some help on. My steel turbo wastegate line has a hold-down tab welded (soldered?) to it that is anchored to the top manifold bolt on cylinder 3 with a second nut. The ATS manifold uses shorter allen-head bolts and makes no provision for this tab. What have you guys done about this? Is the tab soldered and can be heated an removed? Just cut it off with a hack saw? Replace it - solder - a new one on and anchor it under the head of the #3 allen-head bolt?

I know, I know, loose the housing for a 16cm non-wastegated one. I also installed a 14cm wastegated housing last night and I'm not inclined to solve the problem that way just yet!

Oh, yeah. Mine's an early '98 12-valve. Don't know if this makes a difference.

Thanks,

-Jay

BTW: freezing the end pieces and putting the middle piece in the oven really makes assembling it easy. But you better have the spacing right by the time the parts equalize in temperature or you have to fight it putting it on!

Jay,

I know this issue was brought up before, you might try a search (if it is working again).

Please let me know how the 14 and ATS work out for you.

I heated mine up and reshaped it to use one of the bolts. I think I may have cut and redrilled it also. Took some trial and error to get it to where it looked good. Has held up near two years now on my 97' 12V.

Cooker,

Yeah, I thought so too, but a couple of searches didn't turn up anything on this specifically, and not much on the ATS in general.

QRTRHRS,

Thanks for the input. I take it then your heating didn't cause the tab to come loose. Maybe it's brazed on. I'd hate to mess up the tube trying to get it off and moved or replaced, but I suppose a new one wouldn't be very expensive.

Anyone else with some experience on this?

Thanks,

-Jay

JGK,

I had the same problem. I wonder why ATS didn't incorporate some sort of new mount for the boost line. Mine is still sitting on the manifold un-secrured. The tab part anyway. The line is 2 inches above. Does not seem to hurt anything.

I think the 24 Valve guys had a problem with the heater line being secured by the OE exhaust manifold bolt. ATS didn't have a provision for that either. A few guys made some sort of new mount.

BTW: Did you have to grind the allen wrench to get the center top bolt on the ATS manifold.

HEMI,

Yeah, I wondered what they were thinking on those two bolts (#3 and #4). Didn't grind the allen wrench. Have a set with the ball end that allows off-axis twisting. Grabbed the other end with a pair of vice grips for leverage and reefed down. Can't use a torque wrench that way, but sometimes you just have go with what you've got.

Haven't decided what to do with the tab. May just saw it off, but I'd sure like the line supported. Cummins wants $30 for a new steel line if I mess mine up.

Thanks for the reply.
