Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Need help identifying this sound

I've searched and searched and can't find this particular noise anywhere.



The noise sounds like tires rubbing lightly on the bumper, like a consistent growl. It happens when I approach a stop light or am riding the brakes into the garage. It persists once I stop. It goes away if I put the auto trans into neutral or if I raise the RPM's slightly. It also stops if I let off the brake while in gear.



It started under moderate towing, while stopping a 9000 lb boat. It is occurring more often now and without any load at all.



I'm stumped, please help.

I have two guesses at it. Brakes are shot and going into the roter or the u joints

Could be the power steering pump since it is supplying the boost power for the brakes?? bg

It's not the rotors, because it continues once the truck is stopped. Do you think it could be the torque converter?



I'll check the PS pump next.

I had a noise like that years ago on my chevy. . It was a bad flex plate. Can you take you inspection cover off and look and see? That might be the issue.

Anybody else?? It seems to be in the TC is this a TC noise or am I going to have to sell this thing and get a 6 speed??
