Going up hill near Monteagle, Tn I started to feel vibrations and got some noises. I made it here but there isn't much in town. The noises sound like they are coming from the bell housing area. The clutch still works, 5th gear still works. I just don't want to conitnue driving it to WI. With a lack of a shop and tolls, about my only option is being towed back to Chattanooga and visiting AAMCO, or Winchester, Tn with a dealership.

What do ya think, screw it and contine driving it?

Should I stay away from AAMCO?

Any help or recommendations would be helpful.

Anyone able to help call 478 396 5057

Thanks

Justin

UPDATE:

Okay 5th won't work anymore. I tried it while stopped, and felt it engage. But while on a road test at speed, the noise gets louder whlie trying to use 5th but I couldn't get in. The noise also gets worse when I push in the clutch. The noise get faster with engine speed. Reverse feel jerky.

My gut feeling is saying pressure plate or something else in the bell housing fell off.

It may be the springs on the clutch letting go... I had a clutch do that a while back, and had to kill the truck to get it into gear, or roll it in, as the springs would not stop all the shafts in the transmission. . Not sure this is whats going on, but just an idea. Best of luck to you, and keep us updated.

If 5th and reverse are having problems it's going to be a problem at the rear of the transmission. Reverse is at the back of the main case and 5th is in the tailhousing.

When my 5th/rev started acting up 1800 miles from home I tried to limp it home. After 1400 miles it really came apart near Flaggstaff. With TDR Travel Companion (thanks Bob for storing my truck while I arranged to get it shipped home)) and my Dad's (driving out and towing our gooseneck home) help I was able to get home without TOO much extra expense.

On my nv4500 it was the rear bearing on the countershaft. The poor shifting into 5th/rev was from the countershaft moving around. The really bad noises that stopped us in Flaggstaff was the tapered rollers getting out of the bearing cage.

So I got to a place to work on it myself. The transmission is out and a few questions popped into my head:

-Is the clutch plate supposed to rattle? Both of the smaller springs are bouncing back and forth. There is obvious wear marks on the larger springs as well.

-It has been 4 years and 40,000 miles since I installed this clutch. Aren't there supposed to be some needle bearings in there. They are all gone.

Time to start hunting some parts.

Justin,

Just tried to call you. I'm in Nashville with a SBC distributor just down the street. Be glad to run one down to you tonight if it would help. Check your voice mail and give me a call if I can help.

Thanks for the offer, I've already got parts on order.

I found a transmission shop in Manchester, TN. Many praises to Banner Automotive. They were quick with repairs.

Now that all is finallly fixed, the source of the problem and noise: One of the internal bearings failed. After that the the gears on the input shaft and the cluster gear were torn up. After both of those being replaced, new seals, syncros... , plus labor; ouch!! And a new SBC clutch and needle bearing.

The transmission shop said the transmission was low on oil, not empty but still low. A lot can be said for checking fluids regularly.

I put a temp gauge in mine after I blew it up. Twisted the input shaft clean off due to not enough oil. The killer was we were going on a trip and I was just about to crawl under the truck and check it when one of the family emergencies that areent really an emergency came up and distracted me. About 20 minutes before it let go I thought to myself oh crap I never checked the oil, Oh well if it made it this far its probably ok... ...
