Help!!

I need to get my 1998 24 valve smogged (a whole other rant). The first hurdle is that the California Commie Government literature says that I have to have a catalytic converter even though it didn't come with one installed from the factory (the one place I called contacted the dealership and verified no catalytic converter needed) but they say I will fail the visual because there is no resonator (I have an aftermarket 4in exhaust) even though it is not part of the emmissions system!!

So does anyone know of a smog station with half a flippin' common sense that will pass my truck on a visual only smog test?

I'm in San Carlos on the San Francisco mid-peninsula... . don't say precision tune in Redwood City because they drink the cool aid.

Thanks in advance.

Good luck with this. If they don't follow the directions given with the cool-aid they lose their license. The exhaust is part of your emission system, like it or not. I had to replace an exhaust manifold on my motorhome Ford 460 because it was cracked. It was a very expensive ordeal. Just one more reason to keep all the OEM parts.

Sorry...

throwing codes. Have to get them cleared first. P1693 - have to figure this one out; P0463, Fuel level sensor A circuit high input (how hard is this to change? Fuel hasn't read right for a long while); P0720 - output shaft speed sensor.

Found Smog check Express in San Carlos... he accepted owner's manual saying no catalytic converter needed. However, he went to plug in an OBDII reader. I thought this was a visual only check... why did he need to plug in?

I hate Kommiefornia!!!!!!!!!! I can't wait to move out... . but the libs are ruining other great states!!

Not all Doges were 50 sate legal. Going to have to get the exhaust system back to something resembling OEM. I know that there are performance shops in Cali that can help.

DieselLady lives in CA, IIRC she is a mechanic. She may be able to offer some advice, send her a PM.

The truck does not have to be modified to Cali standards to pass smog !There were no cats required on any 2nd gen 24 calves. It just has to be compliant to the standards it was built to. There is no retro-fit laws for pick-ups yet.
Once the ck engine light issues are repaired it will pass smog. It doesn't need a resonator to be smog legal but it does need a muffler.
Diesel Lady is in lancaster area a bit of a drive from the Bay area.

You can not pass with dtc's in the engine controller. Very simple fix what is broken

Im NOT SURE??? but isn't this part of the reason THAT THEY HAVE SMOG CHECKS in Calif, at least that's what I thought when I lived there. Why NOT JUST FIX IT!!!! I couldn't stand driving something that I knew was broken somehow. BTJMO

Damn WHAT A CONCEPT Bob is that in the Chiltons someplace that I didn't read yet, im still looking at the pictures :-laf

Crazy concept... ... ... ... ... right

Was just thinking of your dilemma, I use to have some Gas Powered Cars that had a problems with passing Smog in Calif. I didn't see WHY???? with a dual quad tunnel ram sticking out of the hood with uncorked headers M&H Racemasters in a tubed out rear-end, running on a local airport AV GAS, it ran pretty darn clean at about 7,000 RPM or More.

The way I did it was find Ja-far's local Smog station and rumble into the shop and say SMOG IT PLEASE!!!!! Ja-far would ask your kidding right? NO go ahead Check it im sure it will pass. I put a $100. 00 bill over the odometer ( THE FIRST THING THEY LOOK AT) and IT PASSED!!!!! but for some reason he had the tailpipe sensor in another auto's tailpipe????? I could never figure it out but my $100. 00 bill was missing I paid for the smog cirt and back on the trailer and off to Whittier Blvd I would go to make back my smog fee. :D

Mine was passed last time with no muffler..... just the resonator. Don't know if he thought it was the muffler or if he didn't care.
