I am installing the Jacobs exhaust brake that I removed from my old truck into the new one. I cut the wire from pin 20 of the ECM when I removed the harness, and got a short pigtail with a butt splice on one end and an ECM connector on the other from Cummins. I connected this pigtail to the wire harness, but now I cannot get the pin to go all the way into the ECM connector. When it stops, there is still about 1/4" of the pin still showing outside of the connector shell.

Any help is much appreciated. Leave post here, email me at -- email address removed --, or call me toll free at 877-919-0410.

Im to assume that you removed the plastic plug that was in the ECM connector before installing the wire. The ECM connector must be removed from the ECM,the plug shoved out with a paper clip, install the ebrake wire and reinstall the connector to the ECM.

I did remove the plug from the ECM, and also removed the red plastic plug. When I try to insert the new pin into the connector, it stops with about 1/4" of the pin still outside the connector housing. The pin should be completely inside the housing and not should not be visable.

Here is a pic of the pigtail from Cummins...

and here is a close-up of the pin ...

I think that Cummins may have given me the incorrect pin for the ECM.

Ken,

When I installed my e-brake, I had the same problem! With the pin in that partial position, I tried the brake and it would NOT engage.

I just kept gently probing with it and after several tries, it suddenly slipped right in. No idea why the problem, but with a half dozen tries and as panic was setting in, I got it.

Don't know that this helps. Good luck.

If I remember correctly, my pin was a male pin approximately 1 inch long. My e-brake had the connection wires reversed in the harness. The male pins would not work under the dash to the connector. They had to be female for that position. I had to reverse the wires end to end in the harness and it worked. Good Luck!

That pin doesn't look right to me. Cummins NW here has chrome pins, not gold ones. The pin should be cylindrical shaped the whole length. That gold one looks like it is cylindrical only in the center section with locking springs on the tip and tabs where it should seat in the harness connector.

Here's the scoop. Cummins did give me the incorrect pin the first time. Went back tonight and we took an e-brake kit off the shelf and looked at the pin on the harness and the parts guy matched it. I connected the pin to the harness and it inserted with no problem. Brake works OK now.

FYI, the Cummins part number for the correct pin is 3824810. Price is $4. 00 each. I have an extra one now. I will keep my receipt, so if anyone needs the number in the future, please ask.

A special thanks for Rob Hanson for his assistance with my problem.
